Leading tile superstore earmarks 2018's most important interior design characteristics so far.

Crown Tiles, the Midlands' premier superstore for floor tiles and other flooring, has highlighted the interior design developments which it believes has characterised 2018 thus far.

The emergence of the tropical theme has been notable, and Crown Tiles has drawn attention to the range of fittings indoors - from shower curtains to sofas - which have benefitted from a liberal dose of 'greenery'. That has meant anything from plant prints to full on colourful tropical designs, proving that just because we don't live in a tropical country, it doesn't mean that we can't pretend. Wildlife, birds and insects are other design elements which are at home in a tropical theme.

Rich pigments have also been highlighted by Crown Tiles as being one of the important developments of 2018 so far. This includes braver colour choices around the home, from beds to walls and sofas. According to Crown Tiles, 2018 has told us that it's OK to be moody, with violets and blues increasingly coming into the equation.

An international outlook has also been noted by Crown Tiles, in line with current buying patterns. There are many pieces of furniture, fixtures and fittings which can take their inspiration from abroad, such as those which are Indian-influenced, and Crown Tiles expects these exotic tastes to develop further. Examples of this fusion style are prints which feature patterns more readily associated with Arabic and Asian design, such as block printing, and can be used in anything from walls to kitchen floor tiles.

In keeping with the emergence of preferences for bold colours highlighted above, Crown Tiles has confirmed that 'black is back'. The company believes that the colour black is back in a big way, and this has even manifested itself in black walls finding some favour as an elegant option which is not as intimidating as some might perceive. Black also has the advantage of being suitable for pairing with other lighter colours, enhancing the overall appearance, and even size, of a space, Crown Tiles has said.

Smooth edges and curves are another interior design development in 2018 which Crown Tiles has highlighted, as clean lines have become less essential to achieving both style and comfort in the same space. These kinds of styles hark back to the 1960s and 1970s, but can suit today's interiors just as well as they did in decades gone by.

A company spokesperson for Crown Tiles said: "At Crown Tiles we always have our eye on the latest developments in the interior design world, in order to keep our own collection as fresh as possible. This year has taught us that interior design goes in cycles, as evidenced by many of the design characteristics which seem to be influenced by themes from yesteryear."
