THE MOST IMPORTANT WEBSITE CRASH IN UK HISTORY?

Government website crash reveals catastrophic lack of foresight says leading website tester

Yesterday evening’s crash of the government’s online voting registration website which led to hundreds of thousands of people potentially being denied the chance to vote in the upcoming EU referendum could and should have been avoided, says Sascha McDonald, a UK website performance testing expert and Founder of CloudLoad.io whose system ensures crashes such as last night’s do not occur.

McDonald said “We often see companies cut corners on testing to save time and budget, but you wouldn’t expect it from the government, especially in a matter of this importance. The government’s web people must have been expecting a surge in online registrations but clearly their website wasn’t ready. The fact that the website has let thousands of people down in a knife-edge referendum where every vote matters means this website crash could affect the UK’s future for decades to come”

McDonald went on say “Project managers should budget and plan for effective performance testing. It typically takes between 4-6 weeks with 1-2 testers and supporting tools to get things right before a big online surge. Sadly it looks like this didn’t occur in this case”
