ROAR! Street performance event launches a charter for the people of Worthing

News provided by Jump Start Initiative C.I.C on Friday 13th Jun 2014

A two hour celebration of individual empowerment through communication, featuring hip-hop, rap and dance performances by Northbrook College music students and local artists. Compered by the new Worthing town crier, Robert Smytherman (Liberal Democrat councillor and current Mayor of Worthing 2013-2014).

Also launching a new initiative – The Worthing People's Charter. A manifesto of ideas to help make Worthing an even better place to live, work, play and study.

ROAR! is part of the WOW (Worthing World of Words) eight day festival celebrating the power and beauty of words and language.

The Worthing People’s Charter is a project created by the Jump Start Initiative to stimulate ideas for positive ways to enrich the social and cultural community of Worthing, and give people a chance to express what’s important to them. A selection of ideas submitted for the Charter will be presented by the town crier at ROAR! The audience will be asked to vote for which ideas they'd like to support.

People in Worthing can submit their ideas for the charter via an online survey or by writing on charter posters displayed in the cafes and bars around Worthing.

A visual artists group called LOCA (Littlehampton's Organisation of Contemporary Arts) will also be creating chalk art at ROAR! Members of the audience will be able to join in and help the artists create their fantastic artworks.

ROAR! takes place at Speakers Corner - the official space for Worthing's community voice. This open space benefits from a bylaw allowing the public to hold speeches and debates. Speakers corner is therefore a perfect place for an event that demonstrates the power of individual communication.

"Great to hear about this exciting project. Really pleased to be asked to be part of It." - Robert Smytherman (Worthing Mayor and town crier).

"Go Jump Start! You've got some great ideas here and I hope that the people of Worthing are ready for this!" - Melody Bridges (WOW/Worthing Word of Words Festival)
