A project that won The Banker Magazine Technology Projects of the Year 2018 award in the category of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics forms the foundation of a fascinating talk to be presented at the QASymphony software testing conference Quality Jam 2018.

‘Using BDD to Test a Robotic Process Automation Solution’ will be presented at the conference by Mario Matthee, Head of SQA Architecture and R&D: Global Testing Solutions at software development and testing company DVT. Matthee will share insights from this real-life project, as part of a speaker line-up that features some of the brightest minds in the industry. Behaviour Driven Development (BDD) helps to develop shared understanding so that user requirements are understood by all roleplayers in the project cycle.

Taking place on 18 October 2018, QASymphony’s Quality Jam conference creates a space for learning new skills and allows delegates to access expert industry perspectives on what matters in Agile development and testing.

Matthee’s presentation will share valuable learnings into a project that recently garnered an award from The Banker Magazine Technology Projects of the Year award, in the category of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics. DVT was an integral part of the team that won South African banking conglomerate Nedgroup Investments this prestigious accolade. The award, which is backed by Financial Times, recognises best innovation in financial technology across 14 categories and invites entries from around the world. Projects are required to demonstrate the innovative, transformational and creative use of technology.

“Our team was responsible for the testing of a new investment bot for Nedgroup Investments,” explains Matthee. “We faced many challenges, such as distributed teams, being too Agile, red tape, complex financial models and more. It was a journey of growth and learning, and delegates attending Quality Jam will be able to travel this journey with us as we share our story. BDD is not as scary as it is made out to be!”

The project tested an automated savings platform called ‘Extraordinary Life’, an end-to-end digital journey designed for Nedgroup Investment’s customers, which integrates artificial intelligence, chatbot, advanced investment algorithms, web and API development. The results showed a 70% reduction in testing time and development to implementation with test automation.

"This project had the luxury of working directly with the business product owner, who was an integral part of the delivery team: answering questions, helping remove impediments, testing as functionality was released, logging defects, retesting fixes, informing project sponsors of the progress and providing motivation to the team, to mention a few," says Matthee. “The fact that the project won an international award is a great example of what can be achieved when you have the right people in the right positions for a project, working towards a common goal, and along the way challenging how projects are delivered."

Matthee’s presentation at Quality Jam will include an examination of the role of manual testers in BDD and how to reconcile Agile with one’s own way of working. A short video of the bot in action will also be presented.

Venue: The Brewery, 52 Chiswell Street, London, EC1Y 4SD, UK.
