Tickets are on sale now for Sounds of the Tyne – an evening of contemporary folk music, performance, dance and spoken-word, curated and hosted by Kathryn Tickell and Magnetic North East

On Thursday 28th June, Tyne Bank Brewery will play host to some of the region’s finest performers, with the aim of bringing to life the sounds of our region. Sounds of the Tyne promises to be a fun-filled evening of drinks and dancing, and will kick off with acclaimed singer-songwriter, Eve Simpson. Simpson has been described by The Crack Magazine as having ‘a voice as pure as a mountain stream’. Plus, she has supported the likes of Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, The Lake Poets, Cattle & Cane and UB40.

Next on the bill, are Slap Squeeze and Strum, which is made up of three of the North East’s favourite music and theatre performers: Phil Corbett; Zoe Lambert and Jane Holman. The trio have worked together in a variety of combinations over the decades but, for Sounds of the Tyne, they will be performing a new set of local material, bringing the words and music of the North to life.

The audience will be invited to enjoy a drink from the award-winning Tyne Bank Brewery Tap, before taking their seats for Star & Shadow – a multi award-winning Rapper sword dance team, based in the Ouseburn Valley. Inspired by the traditional dance of Northumberland, Star & Shadow are guaranteed to amaze you with their glistening steel blades, twirling skirts and acrobatic routines.

The evening will end with an explosion of Bag Pipes, courtesy of Sesh Grenade. Described as a ‘warts and all approach to distil the joy of improvised, traditional music-making,’ Sesh Grenade promise to get you up and dancing!

Sounds of the Tyne is just one of a string of events, throughout 2018, aiming to raise funds for Newcastle-based charity, Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland. Now in their 40th year, the charity is looking to raise £40,000 in 2018, enabling them to continue their work with women and girls affected by sexual violence.

Kathryn Tickell, curator and host of Sounds of the Tyne, said:

“I’m thrilled to be hosting Sounds of the Tyne at Tyne Bank Brewery this June! The evening brings together some of Magnetic North East’s most unique and talented performers, spanning contemporary folk music, dance, performance and the spoken-word. It promises to be a spectacular evening of drinks and dancing. Plus, the evening will be raising vital funds for Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland - a local charity, which supports women and girls in our region. I look forward to seeing you all there!”

Sounds of the Tyne will take place on Thursday June 28, 2018 from 7pm – 10pm at Tyne Bank Brewery, 375 Walker Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE6 2AB. Tickets are £15 for general admission. Please note that an additional Eventbrite Booking Fee will be charged.
