‘Housing: It's In Our Hands’ - National Community Land Trust Conference 2016

News provided by National CLT Network on Thursday 17th Dec 2015

January 28th 2016 at The Abbey Centre, Westminster

The National CLT Network is pleased to announce the news of their forthcoming conference, 'Housing: It's In Our Hands', the only national event on Community Land Trusts.

The Community Land Trust movement is expanding rapidly across England and Wales, with over 175 CLTs building homes that are genuinely affordable. A number of Government measures, including the Right to Buy and the Starter Homes initiative, will change the way we think about affordable housing in for some while. At the same time, CLTs are busy building homes that are genuinely affordable, based on what people actually earn in their area, and stabilising and strengthening their communities.

This year's national conference will focus on how CLTs can respond to and take advantage of this new housing environment and shape it to the sector's best advantage.

Highlights include: MP Question Time, Danny Dorling (Professor of Geography at Oxford University and author of best-seller, All that is Solid: The Great Housing Disaster), Assemble (Architecture collective and Turner Prize winners, 2016) Peter Hetherington (the Guardian), Baroness Cathy Bakewell of Hardington Mandeville (Lib Dem Housing Spokesperson and Chair of National CLT Network), Professor Christine Whitehead (Professor of Housing Economics, LSE), Advice Surgeries (Triodos Bank, Charity Bank, Anthony Collins Solicitors, CAF Venturesome, Ecology Building Society), Pre-conference visit to East London Community Land Trust, Communications master-class from the Media Trust, breakout sessions including: 'Where do we get the money from?', 'CLTs: Natural partners for local authorities' and 'Staking a place in our cities: The growing Urban CLT movement' with Bristol CLT, Rural Urban Synthesis Society and Granby 4 Streets CLT.

The National CLT Network expect over 180 delegates including: Community Land Trusts; Community housing groups; Neighbourhood Planning groups; Prospective CLTs; Government officials; MPs; Parish Councils; CLT Umbrellas; Housing Associations; Developers; Architects; Funders; Local Authorities; Think tanks; Thought leaders; Academics; Journalists; Bloggers; Students and anyone interested in CLTs.

NOTES TO EDITORS
Community Land Trusts (CLTs) are powerful examples of communities taking control and transforming the future of their local community. They are non-profit, community-based organisations run by volunteers that develop housing, workspaces, community facilities or other assets that meet the needs of the community, are owned and controlled by the community and are made available at permanently affordable levels.

The National CLT Network is the national body for CLTs and supports and promotes the work of CLTs across England.
