Charity celebrates the creation of 10,000 teenage mentors in UK nurseries

10 July 2018

The pioneering youth charity, Power2, is celebrating transforming the lives of over 10,000 young people through its unique teenage mentoring programme.

This milestone will be marked with the latest cohort of teenagers graduating from the programme at a ceremony in London hosted by the Japanese financial services group, Nomura on Tuesday 17 July.

The Teens and Toddlers programme empowers young people who struggle at school by pairing them as mentors to children in local nurseries.

A Youth Index study from the Prince’s Trust published last year revealed that 48% of young people (aged 16 to 25) experienced problems that prevented them from concentrating on their academic work during their school years.

Teens and Toddlers aims to address this issue through life skills training which helps struggling school pupils re-engage with their education and build their confidence.

In addition to receiving coaching from qualified youth workers, students are given the opportunity to put what they learn into practice by becoming mentors to under-fives in nurseries.

“Our programme is the only one of its kind in England”, said Joanne Hay, Power2’s Chief Executive.

“Many of the 10,000 young people we’ve helped were students contending with learning difficulties and self-esteem obstacles. Our work is all about empowering the futures of these young people and others who are disengaged and disadvantaged.”“We’re celebrating their success and look forward to reaching many more youngsters in need of our support across England.”

C, a young person from Newham, who is graduating on July 17th, said: “ I noticed that I can interact with children better than before and that I have grown in self confidence and awareness” Their classmate, A said “I am happy in the nursery. I noticed that I speak much better English and my writing is good.”
