12 hour bike ride raises money and awareness of pancreatic cancer in heart of Manchester

Fifty people, aged 7 to 79, took part in a fun non-stop ride on a 5-seater bike around Manchester between 8am to 8pm on Saturday 16th November. The event raised over £4000 for Pancreatic Cancer Action.

The team, led by local lady Linda Edwards, were determined to raise vital funds and awareness for pancreatic cancer. Linda said; “The support from Manchester was amazing and we certainly put a smile on everyone’s faces as they watched our bike ride around the city.”

The fun bike was taken continuously on a five mile route which included the Zinc Bar & Grill, Hanging Ditch, who supported the team enroute with breakfast, lunch and complimentary drinks throughout the day.

Beverley Hodgson, who lost her husband to pancreatic cancer and was one of the team, said: “We decided to organise this event for to raise awareness of a disease that receives very little attention despite killing 22 people per day in the UK. Only one per cent of cancer research funding is invested in it despite having the worst five year survival rate of any cancer.”

Currently only 3% of those diagnosed with pancreatic cancer survive beyond five years. Pancreatic Cancer Action is committed to working towards earlier diagnosis of the disease so that surgery, currently the only cure, is made available to the sufferer.

Geoff Major, who has to date raised over £50,000 for charities, has just returned from a fundraising trek across the Sahara. Geoff said: "This was a great opportunity for me; working with people in the North West of England and helping fight cancer. It affects so many of us; my extended family has lost seven people to cancer; so I'm always looking for progressive partner charities to work with - and Pancreatic Cancer Action are certainly that!"

Beverley Hodgson, said: “We are so grateful to everyone involved, particularly to The Zinc Bar for their kindness and support and Geoff who made this happen as well as taking part.”
Ali Stunt, Founder of Pancreatic Cancer Action, said: “We are delighted that this team will be raising awareness in Manchester in such a unique and fun way. Thanks to all those who have worked so tirelessly to organise this event.

”As a charity, we rely on the generosity of individuals to help us continue our vital work. Please show your support by visiting their fundraising page for further details so that we can continue research into early diagnosis and raise awareness of pancreatic cancer.”
