11th November 2021 - John Weiss & Son will integrate into sister-company, Haag-Streit UK, on 1st January 2022.

After 230 years, naturally, John Weiss will remain an established product brand; however, it will cease to be an incorporated legal entity, so John Weiss & Son will cease to trade on 31st December 2021.

HS-UK will become the exclusive UK Distributor of the John Weiss range of gold-standard ophthalmic micro-surgical instruments and procedures & implants. It will also take over the sole UK Distributor agreements for the; Haag-Streit Surgical microscope range, the Haag-Streit Simulation medical simulator portfolio, the Nova Eye iTrack canaloplasty microcatheter and the Meridian 810 shortpulse laser.

In addition, HS-UK will be appointed UK Distributor status for the portfolio of ‘Trusted Brands’, which includes; FEATHER ophthalmic scalpels, blades and holders, KERARING corneal ring segments, MedOne vitreoretinal cannulae, Tecfen corneal trephine blades and tissue punches, HEINE primary diagnostic instruments, Lacrivera punctal inclusion systems, SPIGGLE & THEIS lid implants, InstruSafe custom surgical trays, MORCHER implants and ACROfine single-use instruments.

Any existing service contracts, originally purchased from John Weiss & Son, will be fulfilled by the HS-UK Service Division (for the full duration of the contract). Any future contracts, or renewals, will automatically be provided by the HS-UK Service Division.

This reorganisation will be seamless, there is no planned change concerning continuity of the supply of products into the UK market, or to our World-wide network of Distributors. There will be no variation to the current HS-UK and John Weiss operational and staffing structure post-integration, so Distributors, customers and suppliers will continue to deal with the same point of contact(s).

Dean Johnson, CEO of John Weiss & Son and HS-UK commented, “I see this as extremely positive, with the formation of 2 ophthalmic divisions, Diagnostic and Surgical. This will give HS-UK the opportunity to provide a ‘one-stop-shop’ to ophthalmic professionals, enabling us to build on the John Weiss legacy, and its excellent reputation within the surgical industry”.

For further information, or if you have any questions regarding this reorganisation, please do not hesitate to speak to a member of the John Weiss & Son Team on +44 (0) 1279 414969,or email info@johnweiss.com.

Harlow, UK – 28th September 2021 - John Weiss & Son, the leading manufacturer and distributor of gold-standard ophthalmic micro-surgical instruments and procedures hosted a very successful webinar entitled ‘Remodelling the Cornea & Managing Disease with KERARING Segments’
on 23rd September 2021.

Mediphacos' KERARING
intrastromal corneal ring segments are the most complete and versatile corneal remodelling system in the World. These precision implantable devices are used to correct corneal surface irregularities and reduce refractive errors associated with keratoconus and other corneal ectatic disorders.

The ‘Remodelling the Cornea & Managing Disease with KERARING Segments’ webinar discussed a wide range of topics, including; ‘Surgical Technique’, ‘Patient Selection Criteria’ and ‘The Surgeon’s Aim & Goals When Using KERARING’. Other key areas covered by the webinar included; ‘How to Build Implantation into Keratoconus Treatment Protocols for the Greatest Effect’, ‘Using the Nomogram for Surgical Planning’ and ‘Customisation Using Both the Standard and the AS Progressive KERARING Range’.

The webinar was hosted by Mr Mathew Raynor, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Mathew is a very experienced user of KERARING intrastromal corneal ring segments and presented some interesting case studies and success stories. The main theme of Mathew’s presentation was surgical planning, with a particular focus on using the Alfonso classification system to determine the cone type and the corresponding ring type required to maximise keratoconus correction.

Grant Duncan, John Weiss Clinical and Education Training Manager, said, “We were delighted with the success of the KERARING webinar. The Q & A section at the end sparked some lively debate, along with some very interesting questions. I’d like to extend a big thank you to Mathew Raynor and, of course, all those who attended, we look forward to hosting similar webinars in the future.”

A video of the webinar is now available to watch on the John Weiss YouTube channel at https://jweiss.co/keraringwebinar.

Harlow, UK – 8th October 2020 - John Weiss & Son, the leading manufacturer and distributor of gold-standard ophthalmic micro-surgical instruments and procedures, is pleased to announce the launch of the Merilas 810 shortpulse laser in the UK.

The Merilas 810 shortpulse laser provides glaucoma and retina treatments and offers new laser therapy for advanced and end-stage glaucoma. The system offers Transscleral Cyclophotocoagulation (TSCPC), which has been shown to safely reduce intra-ocular pressure in patients where previous medications and treatments were not effective.

The laser boasts outstanding usability, and features a rapid start-up time. The detachable touch-screen display features an easy-to-use, intuitive design, ensuring full flexibility for the user.

The Merilas 810’s unique thermal-electrical cooling system ensures quiet operation. It requires no ventilation slots, which ensures that no dust can penetrate the interior of the laser.

All Merilas lasers are small and compact, allowing easy transportation. Each laser comes with a robust and practical transport case. To ensure safe handling, the continuous wave and short pulse mode are set in separate menus. The wavelength of the laser can be easily identified by the coloured ring around the fibre coupling.

The short pulse mode consists of many alternating short bursts by the laser, meaning the tissue being treated needs less heat, offering a more gentle approach. The 810 wavelength is less absorbed by melanin and haemoglobin and has the advantage of penetrating both the sclera and where the patient demonstrates excessive haemorrhage.

Harlow, UK – 1st
October 2020 - John Weiss & Son, the leading manufacturer and distributor of gold-standard ophthalmic micro-surgical instruments and procedures, is pleased to offer a special 10% discount on the MORCHER range of Capsular Tension Rings (CTRs), in response to the reintroduction of elective surgery in the UK.

MORCHER CTRs
are manufactured from one-piece PMMA. The range consists of; Capsular tension rings, Cionni rings, Capsular ring segments and Capsular edge rings.

All MORCHER CTRs are single-use and preloaded. They are used in cases of defective or partly-missing zonules, and also in potentially complicated surgical conditions, luxation of IOLs, zonuloysis, pseudoexfoliation, and Marchesani syndrome. CTRs are also used to stabilise the capsule in cases of severe myopia.

Cionni rings are CTRs with additional fixation eyelets, to allow the entire ring to be fixated permanently to the sclera with sutures. The suturing eyelets are positioned slightly anterior to the ring, allowing the ring to be placed into the capsular bag, while the eyelets remain anterior to the capsule.

Capsular ring segments were created for patients with extensive and/or progressive zonular loss. The partial PMMA ring segment traces a 120° arc with a radius of 4.5 or 5.0 mm, and an anteriorly positioned fixation eyelet. Unlike the CTRs, capsular segments can be used in cases where a discontinuous capsulorhexis, an anterior capsule tear or a posterior capsule tear, is present.

Due to their sharp-edge design, Capsular edge rings reduce secondary cataracts significantly and prevent capsular fibrosis of the anterior capsule membrane. As the rings prevent the stickage of the anterior and posterior capsule membrane, explantations and secondary fixation of an artificial lens to the capsular bag is facilitated.

The special offer is available now on the entire MORCHER CTR range. Just quote MORCHERQ420 to receive a 10% discount. Promotion ends 30th
November 2020.

Harlow, UK – 24th July 2020 - John Weiss & Son, the leading manufacturer and distributor of gold-standard ophthalmic micro-surgical instruments and procedures, is pleased to announce that a breath shield has been exclusively developed for the OMEGA 500 indirect ophthalmoscope.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, users of binocular indirect ophthalmoscopes are facing challenges when it comes to examining patients. Ophthalmic societies are advising that examiners attach breath shields to their ophthalmic devices to reduce their potential risk of infection.

The OMEGA 500 lightweight breath shield covers the mouth, nose and chin area. It offers a clear view through the ophthalmoscope during examinations, thanks to a cut-out in the optics.

Easy to attach to the instrument, the breath shield allows comfortable working, as there is no contact with the wearer’s nose and all the controls on the ophthalmoscope are freely accessible. The OMEGA 500 can be charged directly on the EN 50 UNPLUGGED wall-mounted charging station while the breath shield remains attached.

The OMEGA 500 breath shield is available to purchase online now from John Weiss’ sister company Haag-Streit UK at https://hsuk.co/omega500breathshield.

Harlow, UK – 7th February 2020 - John Weiss & Son, the leading manufacturer and distributor of gold-standard ophthalmic micro-surgical instruments and procedures, is proud to be the Authorised UK Distributor for Mediphacos KERARING corneal ring segments.

KERARING intrastromal corneal ring segments are the most complete and versatile corneal remodelling system on the market. The precision implantable devices correct corneal surface irregularities and reduce refractive errors associated with keratoconus and other corneal ectatic disorders.

KERARING segments work by remodeling the cornea through the addition technique, while preserving the corneal integrity. The rings' mechanisms of action help in corneal topographical regularisation and refractive correction, preserving the natural corneal prolate profile.

The rings reduce optical aberrations and improve visual acuity and tolerance to contact lenses. The displacement of the corneal apex to the pupillary centre helps in the stabilisation of corneal ectasia, thus delaying or preventing corneal transplantation.

KERARING segments come in two types; Standard rings with constant thickness and KERARING AS which have progressive thickness. Both types offer a 5mm or 6mm diameter.

KERARING implantation is a simple procedure, performed in an outpatient setting. The minimally invasive surgical technique allows the patient to resume normal activities, quickly. KERARING patients have reported high levels of satisfaction, with positive impacts on their quality-of-life.

The reversible and adjustable design allows KERARING to be explanted at any time, allowing the cornea to return to its original characteristics. The segments are compatible with other surgical techniques and offer over 50 options of thickness, arc length and diameter, allowing significant customisation for the patient.

KERARING AS is the first and only intrastromal ring segment with progressive thickness. It allows for even greater treatment customisation options, enabling optimal visual and refractive outcomes to be achieved in each individual case. Implanted using existing techniques and instrumentation, KERARING AS can have a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction of thickness progression.

Harlow, UK – 10th January 2020 - John Weiss & Son, the leading manufacturer and distributor of gold-standard ophthalmic micro-surgical instruments and procedures, is proud to be the Authorised UK Distributor for the Spiggle & Theis range of platinum chain lid implants.

Spiggle & Theis have developed the Berghaus/Schrom platinum lid chain, a flexible implant which restores dynamic closure of the eye in cases of Lagophthalmus, resulting from facial paralysis. The implants have the design of a chain to smoothly adapt to the form of the tarsus and boast pre-drilled holes which are for easier fixation.

The lid chain is manufactured from platinum and iridium, which has many advantages, particularly when considering weight distribution and biocompatibility. The combination of the materials and the chain form is reflected in its above-average performance results and lower rate of post-surgical complications.

Adapted perfectly to the anatomy of the eye, the implant offers many advantages over gold equivalents, including; very good tissue compatibility and excellent cosmetic results. It enables optimum pre-tarsal alignment and maintains long-term flexibility as well as allowing complete closure of the lid.

The appropriate weight needed is determined by pre-operative fitting, with weights from 0.6g to 2.0g in 0.2g increments. Reusable stainless steel test weights are available to ensure sufficient lid closure.

The design is easily reversible and significantly improves patient quality-of-life. The lid chains can also be combined with other surgical eyelid corrective procedures.

Harlow, UK – 11th November 2019 - John Weiss & Son, the leading manufacturer and distributor of gold-standard ophthalmic micro-surgical instruments and procedures, is proud to be an authorised UK distributor for MORCHER, one of the leading international manufacturers of medical products for eye surgery.

As an Intraocular Lens (IOL) specialist, MORCHER develops innovative solutions for complicated and difficult eye surgery, including; implants for cataract and refractive surgery, Capsular Tension Rings (CTRs), aniridia implants and various special implants.

MORCHER foldable Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) are sterile optical medical devices designed to replace or supplement the human crystalline lens. The range of lenses include; the hydrophobic and hydrophilic acrylic lenses, the one-piece PMMA IOLs, IOLs for scleral fixation and the special microphthalmus and myopia lenses, for the treatment of extreme cases of long and short-sightedness.

The popular hydrophilic group of IOLs are made of acrylic material that is foldable and positioned in the capsular bag or sulcus. It includes a ‘bag-in-the-lens’ range which prevents PCO in the visual field and the 90s range which prevents negative dysphotopsia.

MORCHER’s pre-loaded, single-use CTRs offer safer, less complicated surgery. They are used in cases of defective or partly-missing zonules, in potentially complicated surgical conditions or to stabilise the capsule in cases of severe myopia.

The range of rings, which includes CTRs, Cionni rings, capsular ring segments and capsular edge rings, reduce the risk of damaging the capsule or zonula during surgery. They simplify the implantation of foldable IOLs, due to better centering of the lens. This is beneficial in cases of future capsular bag shrinkage.

MORCHER’s invention of special implants, such as the pinhole implant for severe corneal astigmatism and the diplopia implants for neuro-ophthalmic disorders have improved the quality of life for many ophthalmic patients. The invention of the pupil dilator has enabled surgeons to perform safer surgery and achieve better results.

Harlow, UK – 11th October 2019 - John Weiss & Son, the leading manufacturer and distributor of gold-standard ophthalmic micro-surgical instruments and procedures, is proud to be the UK manufacturer of the Wright Acrylic Globe implant range.

Introduced over 60 years ago, Wright Acrylic Globes are used in micro-surgical procedures of the eye and have become established as THE orbital implant of choice for many surgeons, World-wide.

The Globes are supplied in single units, ready-for-use. This reduces the risk of infection and ensures no packaging, sterilisation or cleaning is required. For convenience, traceability stickers are also included.

Manufactured in 12mm, 14mm, 16mm, 18mm, 21mm and 22mm diameters, there is a size to suit every patients’ requirements. The implants are used to replace the volume in the orbit that, prior to surgery, was occupied by the eye. The Globe is either implanted inside the sclera (if evisceration is chosen) or the eye socket (if enucleation is chosen). Either procedure may be used to treat a variety of issues, including; trauma, infection, neoplasm and painful blind eye.

The implant is not visible, but maintains and provides the natural structure of the orbit, supporting the artificial eye. The sphere has machined grooves and a hole through the centre to allow an additional peg to be fitted for suspension of an artificial iris and to aid motility. The porous nature of the acrylic Globes enables fibrovascular ingrowth, increasing mobility and allowing implantation for long-term use, usually for the life of the patient.

Harlow, UK – 4th October 2019 - John Weiss & Son, the leading manufacturer and distributor of gold-standard ophthalmic micro-surgical instruments and procedures, is proud to be the Authorised UK Distributor for the MedOne
range of speciality cannulas.

MedOne Surgical develops, manufactures and distributes high-quality speciality surgical products, World-wide. With a focus on single-use products for vitreoretinal surgery, the comprehensive range includes; general, soft tip, dual bore, silicone oil and subretinal. It also offers a range of backflush instruments, which help Surgeons achieve good surgical outcomes.

MedOne offer soft tip cannulas which have soft, flexible, high-flow silicone tips allowing gentle access to the retina. They are ideal for aspiration of fluid from on or beneath the surface of the retina. Longer silicone tips are ideal for drainage of subretinal fluid from peripheral detachments through an existing tear or break. The range comes in three gauge (g) sizes; 20g, 23g and 25g.

The MedOne range of Dual Bore Cannulas are designed for injection of a liquid such as perfluorocarbon (PFCL) or staining dye, while allowing simultaneous egress of BSS to relieve pressure build up. This increases patient safety, enabling easy use of surgical liquids while controlling intraocular pressure. The range also includes both blunt-tip and infusion cannulas for general injection or aspiration.

Silicone oil cannulas facilitate the process of viscous fluids injection and removal from the eye. The self-retaining feature in the MedOne infusion cannulas allows bimanual surgery during oil fill, in small gauge cases.

Subretinal cannulas allow safe penetration of the retina to either drain subretinal fluid or to inject medication. The PolyTip cannula can be used for penetration through the retina, allowing drainage of subretinal fluid through a minimally traumatic drainage retinotomy.

MedOne backflush instruments are used during vitreoretinal surgery for either the passive or active aspiration of intraocular fluids and debris. Their ergonomic and lightweight design, allows excellent manoeuvrability, featuring a high-volume backflush reservoir for a comfortable grip and better control in micro-vitreoretinal surgery.

Alongside the range of cannulas, the MedOne portfolio also includes a selection of single-use surgical instruments, including; knives, picks and forceps.

Harlow, UK – 19th
July 2019 - John Weiss & Son, the leading manufacturer and distributor of gold-standard ophthalmic micro-surgical instruments and procedures, is proud to be the sole UK distributor for the Ellex iTrack
canaloplasty microcatheter.

Intelligently designed and meticulously tested across each treatment stage, the iTrack surgical system is a minimally invasive approach that allows the physician early intervention, whilst maximising patient quality of life.

The iTrack surgical system comprises the iTrack microcatheter, the ViscoInjector viscoelastic injector and the iLumin illumination source. It is a crucial element in the success of ABiC and Canaloplasty surgery. Using the unique, proprietary illuminated tip, you can monitor its progress through every procedural step. The tip is also lubricious and atraumatic, which means that ease of insertion is enhanced and direction accuracy is maximised to prevent the catheter broaching the collector channel ostia.

An internal guide wire within iTrack provides excellent tactile feedback as the tip is advanced, offering a vital insight on whether the canal is tight, grainy, or completely open.

ABiC performed using Ellex’s iTrack surgical system comprehensively and successfully addresses all aspects of potential outflow resistance. It is a minimally invasive glaucoma surgery that allows you to lower IOP and/or reduce the patient medication burden, both in cases of controlled and uncontrolled glaucoma - maximising efficacy and minimising tissue trauma.
