Sir Ian will be succeeded by Margot Daly, who will become our new Chair of the Board of Trustees from the 4th June 2021. Speaking on the changes, Sir Ian Prosser, GamCare’s outgoing Chair said: “I have no doubt Margot with her significant insight and experience will take GamCare from strength to strength and continue to deliver on the outstanding work GamCare and its staff deliver across the UK.”

Margot Daly said: “I am delighted to take on the role of Chair. The Trustees and I will continue to reinforce the charity’s strong history and important work of providing the very best in clinical care for anyone affected by gambling harms and to continue to develop and improve our services over the coming years. Commenting on the changes to the Board of Trustees, Anna Hemmings, GamCare CEO said: “I would like to thank Sir Ian for all the work he has done to ensure GamCare is the leading provider of information and support for those affected by gambling harms. <![CDATA[ Gambling Charity and Samaritans Launch Bespoke Suicide Awareness and Prevention Training ]]> https://pressat.co.uk/releases/gambling-charity-and-samaritans-launch-bespoke-suicide-awareness-and-prevention-training-dbba93698d82e36034e2e8dace8f6ea5/ https://pressat.co.uk/releases/gambling-charity-and-samaritans-launch-bespoke-suicide-awareness-and-prevention-training-dbba93698d82e36034e2e8dace8f6ea5/ Tuesday 4 May, 2021

National gambling support charity GamCare has worked with Samaritans, the leading suicide prevention charity, to develop a suite of training materials for gambling businesses, to raise awareness of the risk of gambling-related suicide and to give gambling staff the skills and confidence to support customers who may be at risk.

Gambling related harm is a risk factor for suicide and 11% of gamblers contacting the National Gambling Helpline in 2019/20 told GamCare they had experienced suicidal thoughts, either currently or in the past.

To help tackle this issue, GamCare and Samaritans have teamed up to pair their respective expertise in treating gambling related harms and suicide prevention to identify some of the changes needed within the industry to reduce gambling related suicides, providing practical guidelines and training to gambling businesses so they can identify and support customers at risk of or experiencing harm.

GamCare will offer e-learning free of charge and face to face training modules for all gambling industry staff, from customer service teams to safer gambling or compliance teams, to promote greater awareness of gambling-related suicide, the practises staff can apply to help prevent it and the skills to better identify vulnerable customers and support them. The resources also include training on how gambling staff can ensure they are taking care of their own wellbeing when supporting others.

Commenting on the announcement, GamCare CEO Anna Hemmings says: “Pairing our experience and expertise of training the gambling industry and treating gambling harms with Samaritans’ expertise in suicide prevention will make a real difference to those most at risk.

“With the isolation of lockdown exacerbating gambling harms for some people, it is more important than ever that our support services unite to help gambling businesses identify and support their customers at risk of harm. With proper training providing new skills and expertise, the industry and its staff can play a vital role in identifying vulnerable customers at risk of harm.”

Rachel Evans, Learning and Development Consultant at Samaritans, says: "Suicide prevention is everyone’s business and we developed this training with GamCare to educate and equip gambling industry staff with the knowledge and skills they need to identify and support people at risk of gambling harm related suicide. GamCare already delivers excellent training on reducing gambling related harms and our collaborative effort will be the first bespoke training on suicide prevention specifically. We’re proud to have created these much-needed resources with GamCare and urge all gambling businesses to demonstrate their commitment to suicide prevention by enrolling in the training as soon as possible.”

The new training modules follow recently published industry guidelines from Samaritans, which GamCare helped inform as a key stakeholder. In order to ensure the programme continues to deliver quality training and support, an independent external evaluation has been commissioned to continually assess the overall efficacy of the project and its deliverables.

<![CDATA[ Funding Boost for Nationwide Programme on Gambling and the Criminal Justice System ]]> https://pressat.co.uk/releases/funding-boost-for-nationwide-programme-on-gambling-and-the-criminal-justice-system-156379c20478a9fae31026f4a656a083/ https://pressat.co.uk/releases/funding-boost-for-nationwide-programme-on-gambling-and-the-criminal-justice-system-156379c20478a9fae31026f4a656a083/ Thursday 1 April, 2021

Gambling harms are currently under-recognised across the UK Criminal Justice System (CJS), and support for those affected has been underfunded to date. Gambling support charity GamCare will now receive two years’ funding to scale up delivery of its programme to raise awareness and develop pathways to support for people experiencing gambling harms across the CJS.

There are evidenced links between harmful gambling and crime, whether crime is committed to support gambling or to pay off gambling-related debts. Gambling related offending may include fraud, theft, domestic and financial abuse, and links into wider criminality. However, there is a lack of funding, awareness, training, and pathways to support and treatment for people in the CJS experiencing gambling harms.

GamCare recently delivered a two-year pilot project funded by the Hertfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner to introduce screening for gambling harms at key points across the CJS there, and identify the best mechanisms to deliver support for those affected. The charity will now be funded to deliver a larger programme of engagement and awareness raising, designed to raise the profile of gambling and offending, and to improve services for those in contact with the CJS. GamCare has secured funding, approved by the UK Gambling Commission, towards delivery of the National Strategy to Reduce Gambling Harms, through a dedicated programme focused on gambling and the criminal justice system.

Recently awarded Organisation of the Year at the Howard League for Penal Reform Community Awards, GamCare is working to raise awareness of gambling harms amongst professionals across the CJS as well as developing and testing interventions that work best for clients across police, prison and probation services. The charity will facilitate thought leadership across the sector, as well as consult on and test new approaches, providing training to staff in all areas so they can best support their service users.

Anna Hemmings, CEO at GamCare, says: “As outlined in our recent submission to the Howard League Commission on Crime and Problem Gambling, our work focuses on a ‘whole systems’ approach – with initiatives to screen people at arrest and the early stages of the CJS, and responding to needs at various stages in their journey, be it through police, prison, or probation services as well as the courts.

Through our work in Hertfordshire, we’ve demonstrated that this work is scalable and can have positive impacts for those harmed by gambling across the CJS. I look forward to seeing this work develop across England, Scotland and Wales, to reduce the impact of gambling harms for individual offenders, victims, and their families.”

Julia Fazackerley, Head of Development at GamCare, says: “Existing data from our Helpline and treatment services shows us that around 5% of referrals across Great Britain are from people in touch with the CJS, but we know that criminality often goes unreported or undisclosed. Our work in this area indicates similar prevalence of gambling harm to recent data from the Forward Trust’s survey of prisoners, and we know that there is both a desire for knowledge and awareness, plus greater support for those experiencing harm.

The next phase of our programme will mean we can continue to provide a proactive and comprehensive programme of training for CJS professionals as well as developing and testing a range of support interventions specifically for this cohort. We will provide strategic direction for specialist gambling support and provide real value to all areas of the CJS.”

Tim Miller, Executive Director for the Gambling Commission, says: “We welcome the extension of this significant project, including the collaborative approach GamCare has taken to support a wide range of organisations working in the criminal justice sector. Together, these programmes of work have the opportunity to make a positive contribution to reducing harms as part of the National Strategy. We are pleased to be able to approve the funding, which was agreed through regulatory settlements.”

Polling of those affected by gambling harms by leading gambling support service GamCare reveals two thirds (64%) of their audiences think there are not enough resources in the UK to help support specialist treatment Removal of sponsorship on football shirts and more targeted support for young people, women and BAME communities needed Data will be used in GamCare’s response to the 31st March consultation on the 2005 Gambling Act review in calls for further provisions

GamCare, the leading provider of gambling support services who operate the National Gambling Helpline, has consulted its audiences to help shape wider UK provisions for those harmed by gambling as 64% of users think more resources should be available to gamblers and their loved ones experiencing negative impacts.

Lived experience must drive reform

GamCare has put its service users’ views at the heart of its response to the government’s consultation on the review of the current Gambling Act. 343 people responded to a recent survey about how to tackle gambling issues in the UK, and their experiences highlighted the need for:

Increased investment in research, education and treatment to protect and support those at risk of or experiencing harm from gambling.Investment in inclusive support that reflects the needs of young adults, women, and members of BAME communities, who are currently under-represented in treatment services.More safer gambling messaging to be used by gambling businesses - including clear signposting to the National Gambling Treatment Service.A collaborative approach
to finding the right combination of measures to regulate online gambling and reduce gambling harms.Consideration of greater resources to be given to industry regulation, reflecting the true scale of the sector, and the introduction of an Ombudsman to deal with complaints from the public.GamCare’s Safer Gambling Standard to be highlighted as a useful quality mark for licenced gambling businesses, to signify best practice for consumers.

The survey also highlighted that people harmed by gambling would value:

A halt to gambling companies sponsoring football shirts. An overwhelming 80% of those surveyed want to see a ban on gambling companies sponsoring sporting events, with 83% specifically favouring a ban on sponsoring football shirts.Further restrictions on advertising to children and young people, as 84% of respondents say not enough is done to restrict gambling advertising from children and an overwhelming 89% want to see access to gambling taken away from children completely. 83% of people surveyed also said they want to see more help for the targeted 18-25-year-old age bracket.

GamCare’s support and treatment services are available to people with a gambling problem themselves, plus family members and friends who are worried about their loved one, 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

More than half, 55%, of people answering GamCare’s survey had received some form of help including talking therapies delivered by gambling charities.

Further views from those affecting by gambling harms including family members and friends speaking to the need for social change to connect those who gamble with the risks from the outset, including:

Raising awareness of the risks associated with gambling early on, and normalising discussion about gambling. Gambling has the potential to be harmful, and not talking about it makes this worse.Better safeguarding for gamblers experiencing harms, such as further gambling limits - 71% of respondents want to see further limits introduced to online gambling accounts and 83% want to see a ban on ‘VIP’ schemes which reward people for gambling more.Raising broader awareness through the media to highlight how gambling problems affect gamblers, their families, relationships and how this can lead to even more worrying problems like domestic abuse. One of the surveyed users said: “Given the amount of screen time gambling companies receive, it literally subconsciously fuels gambling addiction.”

84% of respondents also said they want to see gambling companies cover the cost of research, education and treatment for gambling harms.

In response to the survey, Anna Hemmings, CEO at GamCare, says:

“The recent pandemic has only increased common risk factors including isolation, boredom and money worries. Young men under 35 make up the majority of those who seek help via our Helpline. We want to encourage anyone who is worried about themselves or a loved one to contact us - we can offer expert advice and arrange for them to get the support they need.

She continued: “The review of the 2005 Gambling Act has come at just the right time as we are climbing out of lockdown in the UK, and the increase those seeking help with their online gambling has become a worrisome problem. We want people to realise the first step is to seek non-judgmental help from our trained advisers after what has been a terribly damaging year for us all.

“Gambling is a serious health harm and we welcome discussion to bring this problem to the forefront of addiction issues, and to ensure we can secure sustainable funds to meet the needs of those affected.”

<![CDATA[ Hertfordshire Pilot on Gambling and Crime Releases Final Report and Recommendations ]]> https://pressat.co.uk/releases/hertfordshire-pilot-on-gambling-and-crime-releases-final-report-and-recommendations-d63dd6be36b8fd089895ff931327b1b4/ https://pressat.co.uk/releases/hertfordshire-pilot-on-gambling-and-crime-releases-final-report-and-recommendations-d63dd6be36b8fd089895ff931327b1b4/ Monday 8 March, 2021

Gambling support charity GamCare is sharing learning and achievements from a two-year pilot project designed to explore and offer specialist gambling support for people in contact with the criminal justice system (CJS) across Hertfordshire – from arrest through to probation. The project was funded and supported by the Hertfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC).

Despite being impacted by COVID-19, the Hertfordshire Problem Gambling Project has delivered training to 500 workers across the CJS in Hertfordshire, helping them to identify gambling harms and refer to specialist support provided by GamCare. Screening for gambling harms has been introduced at 14 key points across the system – from police custody suites to prisons and probation services – and a dedicated treatment practitioner for those in contact with the CJS is now available.

GamCare, who were recently awarded Organisation of the Year at the Howard League Community Awards, has also provided an in-cell activity pack, designed to boost wellbeing and raise awareness of gambling harms, to more than 1,000 men in HMP The Mount, as residents have been confined to cells for extended periods of time during the pandemic.

Anna Hemmings, CEO at GamCare, says: “There are established links between gambling and crime, whether crime is committed to support gambling or to pay off gambling-related debts, and research has also found that prison populations are more vulnerable to disordered gambling. Our work focuses on a ‘whole systems’ approach – with initiatives to screen people at arrest and the early stages of the CJS, and responding to needs at various stages in their journey, be it through police, prison, or probation services.

We’re grateful to Hertfordshire PCC for supporting this pilot across the county. We’ve demonstrated that this work is scalable and can have positive impacts for those harmed by gambling across the CJS, and I’m proud of our small team for delivering so much through this pilot despite significant challenges presented by the pandemic.”

Julia Fazackerley, Head of Development at GamCare, says: “Our recent work has involved building relationships from the ground up and raising awareness about gambling harms. While many police, prison and probation staff know anecdotally about the link between gambling and crime, there are very few structures in place to help assess or address this, and we’re focused on changing that. We will continue to emulate the good practice developed through our Hertfordshire project nationally, and will continue to deliver training to CJS staff alongside developing pathways to our support and treatment and bespoke resources.”

David Lloyd, Hertfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner, says: “My role includes supporting new and alternative projects which reduce crime in Hertfordshire. For some people gambling harm can be as much a driver of crime as drugs. I supported this project in an effort to reduce the impact on the police and criminal justice system for individual offenders, victims, and their families. By working with offenders and partner agencies we are able to steer people away from committing crime in our communities. I am glad it has been a success.”

<![CDATA[ New Code for Gambling Industry to Simplify Information about Safer Gambling and Support ]]> https://pressat.co.uk/releases/new-code-for-gambling-industry-to-simplify-information-about-safer-gambling-and-support-8604e36ff95ee30f85e71d4b8fa97490/ https://pressat.co.uk/releases/new-code-for-gambling-industry-to-simplify-information-about-safer-gambling-and-support-8604e36ff95ee30f85e71d4b8fa97490/ Friday 5 March, 2021
GamCare launches new Industry Code for the Display of Safer Gambling Information, to make access to tools and support easier for online gambling customers. The Code has been developed in consultation with people harmed by gambling, support services and gambling businesses. All members of the Betting and Gaming Council offering online gambling activities are expected to implement the Code within six months.

National gambling support charity GamCare is launching a new Code of Conduct for betting businesses which will simplify how information about safer gambling tools, plus the support available for anyone struggling to control their gambling, is displayed on UK gambling websites and apps.

The new Industry Code for the Display of Safer Gambling Information sets out how online gambling businesses can make information about safer gambling tools and specialist gambling support services more prominent, visible, and consistent for online customers, ensuring resources and services are clear and easy to access.

According to Gambling Commission data, participation in online gambling activities has increased during the pandemic with a month-on-month increase of 6% in active accounts and 12% in bets1. In light of this, and the ongoing national lockdown, the Commission has urged gambling businesses to be extra vigilant as people will be spending more time at home and online, and may feel more vulnerable as a result of the length and uncertainty brought about by the pandemic period.

It is estimated that less than 5% of those affected by gambling harms across Great Britain currently access gambling support services2. Information on how to access these services, as well as how to access tools such as deposit limits and time outs, is not currently displayed in a consistent, accessible format across gambling apps and websites. While there has been around a 14% increase in customers implementing safer gambling tools during the pandemic, there is still more that can be done to ensure the majority of customers easily know how to access these tools, and further support if needed.

Anna Hemmings, CEO at GamCare, says: “We know that only a small proportion of people affected by gambling harms in Great Britain come forward for support each year. By setting minimum standards for the display of safer gambling information for the online sector, we are looking to improve the consistency of information display, and reduce friction for customers so that they can readily access tools to help them manage their gambling, and to access free, specialist support whenever it might be needed.”

GamCare has consulted with Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) members to create the Code, as well as consulting GamCare service users with lived experience of gambling harms. All BGC members offering online gambling activities are expected to comply with the Code within six months.

Brigid Simmonds, Chair at the Betting and Gaming Council, says: “As the standards body representing the regulated betting and gaming industry, the BGC is committed to promoting safer gambling. A report last week from the Gambling Commission suggested that ‘problem’ and ‘at-risk’ gambling rates fell in 2020, but one gambler experiencing harm is one too many.

Consistency of message and display is vital, so that customers who sign up to an account with any BGC member find it’s easy to view links to the National Gambling Helpline and further support, or the company’s own messaging around setting deposit limits, how to self-exclude or asking their bank to block gambling payments. Prominent, visible and accessible signposting displayed in a simple way will help our customers and increase use of such tools, which is why we welcome the new GamCare Code.”

GamCare and the Young Gamers and Gamblers Education Trust (YGAM) are working together to deliver an evidence-based programme of education and training for young people across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Both YGAM and GamCare work closely with other agencies providing education in Scotland.

Anna Hemmings, CEO at GamCare, says: “The expansion of our work into Northern Ireland is a fantastic step for this programme. The Young People’s Gambling Harm Prevention Programme will give young people in Northern Ireland the opportunity to explore how gambling might be affecting them in a safe and trusted environment, and will give them the tools to make informed decisions. Better links with health and social care services will help us to connect more people with the support that they need to tackle gambling harms.

GamCare is able to provide dedicated support to suit young people’s needs, ensuring that every young person worried about gambling is listened to and fully supported. Young people and their loved ones can contact us around the clock on Freephone 0808 80 20 133, and young people can also access live chat through our dedicated site www.BigDeal.org.uk.”

Caroline Morewood, Senior Social Work Practitioner at Quayside Medical Practice says: "I found GamCare’s training really beneficial in my role as a social worker in a Multi-Disciplinary Team in a GP Surgery. The training enabled me to increase my knowledge of this area and learn about support available to young people affected by gambling."

Antoinette McDaid, who also attended the first round of training, says: “I found GamCare’s training well delivered, with excellent information. I now have a better understanding of causes and impact of gambling than before the training, and the support available to young people and adults with gambling difficulties/addiction.”

YGAM and GamCare have set out the following shared aspirations for the Young People’s Gambling Harm Prevention Programme:

All 11–19-year-olds in England, Wales and Northern Ireland will receive at least one session of gambling awareness education during their secondary/further education. All teachers, youth workers and other professionals working with young people should have access to information about the risks of gambling, how to identify gambling related harm in young people and where help can be sought. All parents and families have access to information about young people’s gambling, how to keep young people safe, and where they can be referred for help and support. All young people (aged 18 and under) who are ‘at risk’ of or have developed a problem with gambling, or are affected by the gambling of someone close to them (e.g., a parent), have access to age-appropriate treatment.

Leading charities YGAM and GamCare have surpassed the first-year targets for their joint Young People’s Gambling Harm Prevention Programme, despite significant challenges imposed by the continuing COVID-19 pandemic.

The four-year national programme is the largest of its kind and aims to deliver evidence-led education, training and support to young people across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as collaborating with other organisations supporting young people across Scotland.

Figures released by YGAM show that the education charity trained 2,906 practitioners in 2020 (up from its original target of 2,592). With this training, those practitioners are expected to reach an impressive 184,700 young people to provide vital educational on gambling and gaming.

In addition, GamCare have trained 4,185 professionals who work with young people and delivered educational workshops directly to 3,947 young people. With just over two months left of their first year of delivery, GamCare has already exceeded training targets by almost 3,000 people to date.

GamCare has also set up the first national young people’s support service, offering information, advice and support tailored specifically to the needs of young people impacted by their own gambling or that of a loved one. Young people are now able to access this service online or over the phone, with support available around the clock.

The Young People’s Gambling Harm Prevention Programme has been established in all regions of England and Wales, as well as expanding education and support services for young people to Northern Ireland for the first time. Both YGAM and GamCare work closely with other agencies providing education in Scotland.

In response to the tests of a global pandemic, both YGAM and GamCare accelerated the digital transformation of their resources to enable them to deliver their workshops online throughout successive lockdowns. These resources continue to be available to anyone that works with young people, including teachers and youth workers. GamCare has also developed an eLearning resource for young people, which can be made available as part of blended learning packages. YGAM Founder and Chief Executive Lee Willows said: “I am extremely proud of the enormous success we have already seen from the programme. As 2020 unfolded, we saw the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic as an invitation to develop YGAM’s digital capacity in all areas of our work. Although this was done as a response to the crisis, the effect has been significantly advantageous for our education programme. Now that the delivery is entirely digital, we have removed enormous barriers which may have prevented some individuals and organisations from taking part. The result is a truly national programme, which is set to continue its fantastic growth in the following years.”

Anna Hemmings, Chief Executive of GamCare said: “Both GamCare and YGAM believe passionately that education on the risks associated with gambling and gaming is an essential part of preventing harms for young people, and increasing their digital resilience overall.

I am particularly proud of the team considering the circumstances in which this has been achieved. The pandemic has proved a huge challenge, yet our teams have continued to deliver great engagement with professionals and young people. We’ve also developed a dedicated support service tailored to the needs of young people.

For any young person worried about gambling, our service is free, flexible, and confidential, and will ensure that each young person receives the most appropriate support for them.”

Linda Scollins- Smith, Head of the National Education Programme for YGAM, said: “We are delighted with the progress over the last year. Our success is testament to the excellent team - most of whom began during lockdown - and the relationships we have with our partner schools and organisations.

We were able to adapt quickly to move our offer online, ensuring we provide teachers and professionals with the tools to inform, educate and safeguard young people in relation to gaming and gambling and the potential risks. We’ve had overwhelming support from those we’ve trained, and we will be working together to ensure children and young people have the support and information needed.”

The Young People’s Gambling Harm Prevention Programme is fully assured and evidence-led, with YGAM and GamCare committed to continual evaluation to ensure that it is providing the most up-to-date and valuable information possible to practitioners.

By 2024, YGAM and GamCare aim to work with a minimum of 13,492 practitioners and partner organisations, ensuing that every young person aged 11-19 has at least one session of gambling awareness education during their secondary/further education.

<![CDATA[ National Programme Focused on Women and Gambling Receives Funding Boost ]]> https://pressat.co.uk/releases/national-programme-focused-on-women-and-gambling-receives-funding-boost-3aad1f8ac17959065840f0368b826777/ https://pressat.co.uk/releases/national-programme-focused-on-women-and-gambling-receives-funding-boost-3aad1f8ac17959065840f0368b826777/ Tuesday 26 January, 2021

National gambling support charity GamCare will receive a further two year’s funding for its dedicated Women’s Programme. The funding comes from a regulatory settlement, delivered as part of the National Strategy to Reduce Gambling Harms.

Previously supported by the Tampon Tax Fund, GamCare’s ground-breaking Women’s Programme is designed to gather and represent the experiences of women affected by gambling harms, to improve the accessibility of specialist support tailored to those identifying as female, and to ensure that organisations supporting women can confidently identify gambling harm and easily refer to the appropriate support services.

Women can be disproportionately affected by gambling-related harms, experiencing financial, relationship and mental health issues. Operating throughout England, Scotland and Wales, the Women’s Programme is uncovering the negative impact of stigma faced by women and working to place women at the heart of the discussion.

Anna Hemmings, CEO at GamCare, says: “Gambling is still perceived as a predominantly ‘male’ activity, which can result in women experiencing greater harm as they may be reluctant to seek the support they need. GamCare is working to change this perception, as gambling can and does affect women in potentially life-changing ways.

We have also found that women’s experiences of gambling are not generally understood within women’s support services – we are working with a wide network of organisations to improve this, and to better understand how gambling harms intersect with the range of other issues women experience. With this insight, we can ensure specialist gambling support services can better serve their needs.”

GamCare’s learning from the first two years of delivering the Programme will ensure that a clear roadmap for the next two years, along with a robust evaluation framework which feeds into the National Strategy for Reducing Gambling Harms, can be implemented from April 2021. Lived experience of gambling harms will continue to be a cornerstone of the Programme.

Neil McArthur, CEO at the Gambling Commission, says: “We are really pleased that we have been able to help this very important support initiative for women who are experiencing harm from gambling. Our evidence shows that the risks have changed due to the COVID-19 restrictions and that some young women have tried new gambling products during this period. We have been very clear with gambling operators that they must do everything they can to keep their customers safe.”

Leading UK gambling support charity can provide help to young people harmed by gambling across Northern Ireland for the first timeChristmas can be a difficult period for those struggling with gambling, or being harmed by someone else’s gambling – now help is easier to find than ever before

GamCare, the largest provider of support and treatment for gambling related harms across Great Britain, has expanded its Young People’s Gambling Harm Prevention Programme across Northern Ireland, and for the first time GamCare is able to provide dedicated support services for under 18s.

GamCare and the Young Gamers and Gamblers Education Trust (YGAM) are working together to deliver this evidence-based programme of education and training for young people across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

We know that Christmas can be very challenging time for people affected by gambling, when financial worries are top of mind, compounded this year by the pandemic and subsequent restrictions which may leave people isolated and away from their support networks. We offer support for young people and their loved ones around the clock on Freephone 0808 80 20 133, and young people can also access live chat through our dedicated site www.BigDeal.org.uk.”

Gary McMichael, Chief Executive at ASCERT, says: “We very much welcome the Young People’s Gambling Harm Prevention Programme, including a dedicated young people’s support service delivered by GamCare.

The risks for young people from gambling harm is an issue of growing concern. As a charity working with alcohol and drug addiction, ASCERT are seeing more and more young people that are experiencing financial problems, and risks of addiction from gambling that add additional complications to their alcohol or substance use issues.

GamCare have provided training to our staff and this has been very helpful to ensuring that we can support these young people and connect them to the right support around their gambling or the harms they are experiencing because of a loved one’s gambling.”

Robbie Butler MLA, Chair of the Gambling Related Harm APG in Stormont, also recently welcomed a partnership with YGAM and Youth Work Alliance, based in Belfast, to deliver training to teachers and youth workers. Mr Butler has campaigned for new laws to help protect people from gambling related harms.

TalkBanStop campaign launches as a 12-month pilot to offer three free tools to help people stop gambling – support via GamCare’s National Gambling Helpline, Gamban blocking software and GAMSTOP self-exclusion.Christmas can be a tough time for people struggling to control their gambling – the pandemic has also increased common risks of isolation and money worries, but finding help is easier than ever beforeFormer gambling addict and successful footballer Michael Chopra in conversation with fellow ex-gambler to highlight how recovery journey starts

Online gamblers struggling to control their gambling this Christmas are being offered a trio of services for free to help kick-start their recovery journey. The TalkBanStop campaign is backed by ex-footballer and recovering gambling addict Michael Chopra.

The Christmas period poses a heightened risk to those struggling with gambling, and GamCare warns that the pandemic has only increased common risk factors including isolation, boredom or money worries.

It’s good to talk

In a new film, ex-Footballer Michael Chopra, 36, spoke with Chris Gilham, 39, about their shared experiences of gambling addiction and what gave them hope on their recovery journey.

Both men fall into the 35-44 age range, which has the highest proportion of people who gamble online.[1]

During the discussion, Michael Chopra spoke of the peer to peer support he received from a former manager. He said: “I never ever let anything get in the way of my football but as soon as the whistle went, my mind just suddenly changed and all of a sudden I was thinking about gambling.

“Then I decided to speak to Roy Keane, he was brilliant. He really took his time to speak to me and took time out of training. It was Roy that really got me the help that I needed.

“There is light at the end of the tunnel. When you’re going through a dark phase you don’t think that. If you’re struggling like I was and need support, head to TalkBanStop.com”

On starting his recovery journey, Chris Gilham added:
“. It wasn’t until my mum said to me ‘he’s ready’ and that it really struck me as she knew I was ready. Until I was ready, it wasn’t going to change.

“I was then able to tell my wife that I needed help and I that was going to change. That was over three years ago and I haven’t gambled since that day.”

Giving space for hope

The 12-month pilot will highlight the benefits of combining free support and practical tools in helping people to stop gambling.

The three key steps and supporting tools are:

Talk: By speaking to one of GamCare’s trained advisers on the National Gambling Helpline (over the phone or via live chat), gamblers and their loved ones can access expert information, advice and support, including arranging access to peer-to-peer support or an NHS referral if appropriate.Ban: Gamban’s software blocks access to thousands of global gambling sites and apps, and can be installed on up to 15 devices - including those in the household. This would usually cost £24.99 per year, and is now being offered free to anyone contacting the Helpline.Stop: GAMSTOP self-exclusion prevents access and creation of new gambling accounts with all online gambling operators across the UK, free of charge. Users will also stop receiving marketing messages from gambling businesses.

The TalkBanStop web address will take users straight to where they can contact each service, as well as offering additional tips on how to block gambling through banks.

Anna Hemmings, CEO at GamCare, says: “After a particularly challenging year when many have been impacted by job losses and reduced income, Christmas can be a difficult time for those struggling to stop gambling.

The TalkBanStop. campaign sends a message of hope to those who are struggling with gambling but don’t know how to start their recovery journey, by providing free tools and support that give breathing space to reflect on what’s going on.

The first step is simply talking to someone. There is support out there to help you make empowered choices about your recovery, and we urge anyone suffering in silence to be inspired by Michael and Chris. They show it can happen to anyone, but if they can get through it, so can you.”

Neil McArthur, Gambling Commission CEO, said: “Christmas can be a challenging time for those experiencing gambling related harm so we are particularly pleased with this collaborative approach to offer joined up and comprehensive services to consumers.

“We are also happy to approve funding of the blocking software pilot and evaluation element of this work through the distribution of regulatory settlement money to properly identify what works.”

With just one call, gamblers will be helped on their road to recovery. These three services working together will offer greater protection to those who want to stop gambling, as well as giving gamblers the space to reflect and concentrate on their recovery over the Christmas period, with specialist support.

National lockdown initially saw fewer calls to National Gambling Helpline as people faced privacy issues and other anxieties caused by COVIDAlthough overall gambling participation has fallen during the pandemic, the most engaged gamblers have increased either time or money spent gambling and used new online gambling productsGamCare has significantly increased online and telephone access to support, including group chatrooms, to ensure consistent help for gamblers and their loved ones during the pandemic

GamCare, the largest provider of support and treatment for gambling related harms across Great Britain, has today provided a report on its services during lockdown, which highlights how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted people experiencing gambling harms.

The National Gambling Helpline, operated by GamCare, is available 24 hours a day over the phone or via one-to-one live chat. GamCare also offer a range of support and treatment services as part of the National Gambling Treatment Service, funded by GambleAware.

Their new National Gambling Helpline During Lockdown report shows that despite lockdown exacerbating existing anxieties surrounding finances and isolation amongst gamblers, their ability to seek help was limited as they struggled for privacy.

Concerns over privacy also drove a switch to more live chats than phone calls, as this channel can offer more discretion if families or housemates are in close proximity – many people contacting the Helpline have not yet spoken to their loved ones about what they are going through and want to know how to broach the subject.

Other trends from the Helpline and GamCare’s frontline services between March – August 2020 included:

Engagement with online group chatrooms increased. Anxieties about COVID were key themes of online conversations, alongside gambling-related issues.Staff on the Helpline flagged increased concern around domestic abuse being experienced by callers. At the start of lockdown there was a significant minority of calls asking for self-exclusion via GAMSTOP (an online self-exclusion tool) to be lifted – highlighting that callers were seeking to gamble again despite previously removing the temptation. This trend has since abated.

The report also mentions that, although existing engagement with GamCare treatment services remained high, the number of people beginning treatment during this period was lower than the previous year.

Research from the Gambling Commission1, published alongside the report, shows the although overall gambling participation has dropped nationally, 18-34 year olds and the most ‘engaged gamblers’ (i.e. those participating in three or more gambling activities per month), have both reported increased time or money spent on gambling, plus using online gambling products they had not tried before. A subsequent YouGov study commissioned by GambleAware2 showed that approximately half (52%) of those saying they gambled more cited ‘relieving boredom or for something to do’ as a reason for doing so.

Anna Hemmings, Chief Executive of GamCare, says:

“There is no doubt that the pandemic has impacted people’s help seeking, particularly in the initial phase of the pandemic when our daily lives were immeasurably changed. Our service users are speaking to us about increasing anxiety, isolation and money worries.

As we now look at further lockdowns across various areas, we need to be aware of the impact and risks for gamblers experiencing harm. We need to be more vocal about encouraging people to seek help despite the external pressures, and to remind people that we’re here to help as we did in the summer with our #ReadyToTalk campaign.

There is no doubt that gamblers and their loved ones will continue to need support, perhaps increasingly so. GamCare is doing all it can to be flexible and tailor its services to meet those complex and changing needs during the pandemic and beyond. From the very first contact you have with us, we can make a difference – if you’re worried about your gambling or anyone else’s, talk to us now.”

GamCare has worked extensively to overcome the issues presented by lockdown, to ensure those struggling with gambling related harms can continue to access specialist treatment and support over the phone or online as part of the full range of services offered across the National Gambling Treatment Service (NGTS), and if people have complex needs, we can refer them to other NGTS providers.

Support is available 24 hours a day via the National Gambling Helpline (Freephone 0808 80 20 133 or web chat via www.GamCare.org.uk), as well as through GamCare’s online Forum where users can connect with others in similar situations.

GamCare’s daily group chatrooms offered extended hours, and structured treatment services are available over the phone and online despite face-to-face services being suspended for the time being.

GamCare also offer an online CBT course, GameChange, which offers users concerned about their gambling the chance to work through eight tailored modules with regular support from a GamCare therapist.

GamCare’s National Gambling Helpline During Lockdown report is based on quantitative and qualitative research from calls to the National Gambling Helpline between March – August 2020. The full report can be found at gamcare.org.uk/about-us/annual-review-and-statistics/

GamCare’s Women’s Programme uncovers scale of female gambling losses and the negative impact of stigma faced by women.

Gambling perceived as a predominantly ‘male’ activityThis can result in women experiencing greater harm as they may be reluctant to seek the support they need. Women’s experiences of gambling are not generally understood within women’s support services

GamCare, the largest provider of support and treatment for gambling related harms across Great Britain, has released the first report from its pioneering Women’s Programme, funded by the Tampon Tax to deliver outreach, education and awareness on the subject. The report outlines worrying trends amongst women who are being harmed by gambling.

Gamblers identifying as female who were interviewed through the programme (a representative sample) reported feeling high levels of shame and stigma because of societal perceptions that gambling is a ‘male’ activity in which women should not, or do not, take part. Some reported an assumption that gambling could not be damaging to them or their families as they were not seen as financial ‘owners’ in the home. These perceptions contributed to low levels of help seeking, and higher levels of gambling harm.

In just the first year of delivering the programme, GamCare focused on barriers to women accessing help and in doing so worked with 300 organisations and more than 3,000 professionals to deliver their CPD accredited training – increasing the confidence of attendees to talk to women about gambling harms and support those affected. Through this programme they aim to use the learning to increase the skills and experience of thousands of intermediaries who can go on to better identify women who need support for gambling related harms.

GamCare’s Women’s Voices survey1
showed:

Women who gamble report significant financial losses, with many reporting losses in the tens of thousands.Shame and stigma are significant barriers for those identifying as female to engaging with support services. Respondents reported that societal expectations of women – i.e. as needing to be ‘good mothers’ and/or homemakers – still need to be tackled. The universal issue reported was a detrimental impact on their mental health.

Carly, a female gambler who contacted GamCare last year, says: “I had been struggling with gambling for around three years. I felt like nobody would understand – everything I had seen said gambling was something for men, not women and not me, but I knew I needed help. My ‘rock bottom’ was… when I lost my home, my job and the relationships that were the most important to me. I knew something had to change, otherwise I would feel like giving up altogether.”

One woman who contacted GamCare, who does not wished to be named, shared the guilt and shame that her gambling impacted on her husband and children: “It’s really complex, the shame you feel – it’s like you’re letting everyone down. My message to other women experiencing harms because of gambling is that you’re not alone. It can happen to anyone, and you shouldn’t be ashamed to ask for help.”

Anna Hemmings, Chief Executive of GamCare, says:

“The issues that women are facing are often hidden from support services. Our Women’s Programme has told us that we need to remove barriers for women to access help with gambling related harm, but we also need to ensure that those providing that support are better equipped to help them.

We must get to grips with the unnecessary shame and stigma women feel around asking for help. Gambling is not just a male activity, and it can affect women in significant, potentially life-changing ways.

We have already achieved a lot in the first year of this programme, and I’m looking forward to the second year of the programme where we will be spreading the learning to improve support for women.”

GamCare receives funding from the Tampon Tax to deliver their Women’s Programme, working with a nationwide network of organisations who support vulnerable women, raising awareness of how gambling is linked with issues affecting women and helping to better identify women in need and engage them with the right support before issues escalate.

GamCare will continue to strengthen referral pathways into support and treatment for women affected by gambling, as well as continuing to gather lived experience from women across the UK and broadening the evidence-base for treatment that works.

By definition, the sample does not include the much greater proportion of women who have not yet sought help or support.

Leading gambling support charity GamCare is launching a comprehensive toolkit for financial institutions, gambling businesses and debt advice agencies across the UK to help them recognise, support and refer customers experiencing gambling-related financial harms, and provide consistent communications across all points of the customer journey.

Year on year, around 70% of callers to the National Gambling Helpline, operated by GamCare, mention some level of gambling debt or financial hardship. Both gamblers themselves and their loved ones can experience harms because of gambling.

A gambler in financial hardship will likely come into contact with many different services when trying to address that harm, but the advice they receive could be inconsistent and may miss important information. To address this, GamCare convened an expert advisory group, bringing together leading debt charities and agencies, high street banks and gambling businesses, and people with lived experience of gambling harms.

This is the first time representatives from these sectors have come together to address gambling related financial harms in a unified way. GamCare’s toolkit is aimed at giving organisations the tools to offer consistent, high quality customer communications about gambling risks, and improving access to support so that issues can be addressed as early as possible and don’t escalate.

The toolkit is available for free on GamCare’s website via gamcare.org.uk/gambling-related-financial-harm, and consists of tailored materials for the banking, debt advice and gambling treatment sectors as well as gambling businesses.

These materials draw together best practice and are informed by the experiences of those who have been harmed by gambling as well as experts from each sector, so that they can tangibly improve customer interactions in future. The toolkit contains core customer messaging, referral pathway guidelines tailored to each sector, and guidance on training staff to give them confidence to support customers who are impacted by gambling harms. Together, these resources can help frontline staff in key industries provide effective, sensitive support to customers and ensure they receive the help they need.

Anna Hemmings, CEO at GamCare, says: “People struggling with gambling present in different ways and often opportunities are missed to provide the support they need. Ensuring that frontline staff are equipped to help and refer to appropriate support is a huge step in improving the outcomes these customers experience. This toolkit, with the support of businesses, charities and gambling operators themselves, is vital to putting those pathways in place.”

Dorothy Liviabella, Head of Vulnerable Customer Strategy at Santander, says: “It has been great to be part of this collaboration on a topic as important as gambling-related financial harm. This toolkit will really help across the industry, to improve understanding of the issue and to shape the support available to those who may be impacted.”

Emma Gibbons, Vulnerable Client Manager at PayPlan, says: “It has been a privilege working on this toolkit with GamCare, to help open up important conversations around gambling and debt. This project has allowed us to develop important guidance and communications for the benefit of vulnerable clients and the organisations that support them. Our experience of clients disclosing a gambling addiction as a cause of problem debt has enabled our team to offer policies, procedures and conversational techniques for the toolkit and we look forward to seeing the results of this new initiative and helping to break the stigma when it comes to talking about gambling and debt.”

Frankie Graham, CEO at Betknowmore UK, says: “Gambling-related financial harms have serious consequences for the gambler as well as those with a financial connection to them. The mismanagement of finances can trigger a cluster of problematic issues; from prevention of everyday functions, such as paying bills, to onset of mental health challenges, such as stress and anxiety. We can start to address these harms through cross sector collaboration and sharing our expertise. Betknowmore UK is delighted to support this programme, and recommend the accompanying resources as essential tools in achieving our mutual goal, which is to keep people safe and free from gambling harms.”

Lauren Iannarone, Director of Sustainability at Playtech, says: “The launch of this toolkit signals a significant milestone in our efforts to foster collaboration across sectors to prevent and address gambling related financial harm. The toolkit published today will help ensure that organisations – across the financial services, treatment, gambling and banking industries - deliver timely, consistent advice, support, interactions and signposting to those who need it most.”

Elyn Corfield, Managing Director – Consumer Finance at Lloyds Banking Group, says: “At Lloyds Banking Group we understand the impacts that gambling related harm can have on customers. We are proud to have collaborated with GamCare and other organisations on the creation of this free toolkit which will be available for businesses to develop how they support customers.”

Maxine Pritchard, HSBC UK’s Head of Financial Inclusion and Vulnerability, says: “We know this is a challenging time for many of our customers, with those who are struggling with gambling being particularly vulnerable. We are proud to have collaborated across multiple industries to develop this toolkit which will help ensure we can use it as part of the training we provide our colleagues, as well as building it into our internal procedures. We have already put in place a number of measures to help those affected by gambling, and this toolkit is another positive step to supporting those at risk of financial harm from gambling. We will continue to look at ways in which we can support customers with gambling additions.”

GamCare launched their Gambling Related Financial Harms Programme in November 2019 to bring together the banking, gambling and debt relief sectors to tackle the everyday financial difficulties that can be caused by gambling through the promotion of best practice support, better identification and more effective customer support.

National gambling support charity GamCare is offering a dedicated hour-long online chatroom session for those in contact with the Criminal Justice System (CJS) impacted by gambling harms on Tuesday 7th July from 3pm.

GamCare operates the National Gambling Helpline, providing information, advice and support for anyone affected by gambling problems, alongside providing a range of free support and treatment across England, Scotland and Wales.

The charity provides daily chatroom sessions for people affected by gambling harms via their website, giving users a space to connect with peers, share their experiences and support one another with help from a moderator if needed.

GamCare is now offering a dedicated hour-long session for those in contact with the CJS to connect with each other, as well as the chance to seek advice from their specialist team working with police, prisons and probation services.

Eartha Heptinstall, CJS Project Officer at GamCare, says: “We know that there is generally a higher number of people affected by gambling harms within the CJS than in the general population. Studies have also indicated that the more complex, prolonged and persistent a gambling problem is, the more likely it is that a crime will be committed and, indeed, that many crimes may result. If a gambling problem remains unaddressed, rehabilitative work in other areas of an individual’s life is not likely to be successful.

GamCare and our partners provide a range of support across the CJS, and we’re running this chatroom to give those in contact with the CJS a safe space to connect with one another and to seek specific advice if they have burning questions they may not be able to address anywhere else. GamCare chatrooms are confidential spaces and can provide a vital channel for peer support in recovery, and our team are also on hand to give additional advice if needed.”

Those who wish to join the chatroom will need to register via the GamCare website beforehand.

GamCare have also created a dedicated online Forum for those affected by gambling harms across the CJS, whether they are gamblers themselves or have been affected by someone else’s gambling.

GamCare’s work across the criminal justice system (CJS) indicates that there is likely to be a higher prevalence of gambling problems and gambling-related harms within the CJS that within the general population, and that at least 10% of the prison population may need support in relation to their gambling. In a recent report to the Howard League Commission on Crime and Problem Gambling, GamCare called for a whole-system approach to tackling gambling-related harms, incorporating police, prisons and probation services, with a specialist national funding model to support this. <![CDATA[ National Helplines Launch #ReadytoTalk Campaign as Lockdown Eases ]]> https://pressat.co.uk/releases/national-helplines-launch-readytotalk-campaign-as-lockdown-eases-acfe89edaa6f611f381d9a6e81533f32/ https://pressat.co.uk/releases/national-helplines-launch-readytotalk-campaign-as-lockdown-eases-acfe89edaa6f611f381d9a6e81533f32/ Thursday 11 June, 2020

A group of the UK’s leading helplines have today launched the #readytotalk
campaign, encouraging people to seek support for problems that may have been aggravated as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, or which they may not have spoken to anyone about while in lockdown.

As lockdown restrictions begin to ease, these organisations want to reassure the British public that whenever they are #readytotalk, their helplines are ready to listen.

The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown has affected people across the country differently. Whether it has meant new difficulties, exacerbated existing issues, or meant that people couldn’t find the space to speak about their issues confidentially, the #readytotalk campaign is aimed at raising awareness of the support services available to help people when they need it most.

The campaign is supported by GamCare, which runs the National Gambling Helpline, alongside Samaritans, Refuge and Cruse Bereavement Care.

The key helpline numbers are:

National Gambling Helpline – 0808 80 20 133Samaritans – 116 123 National Domestic Abuse Helpline (Refuge) –
0808 2000 247Cruse Bereavement Care – 0808 808 1677

Anna Hemmings, Chief Executive of GamCare, says: “With lockdown easing, people have the chance to look up and take stock, to deal with the issues that may have been put to one side. We know that addictions, and gambling problems specifically, can be aggravated by feelings of isolation and distress that have been so prevalent through lockdown. We want people to know we are here to help and ready to listen whenever they are ready to talk. It is great to have support services and helplines united in their desire to help people across the country, especially during uncertain times.”

Ruth Sutherland CBE, CEO of Samaritans, says: “We know that human connection is vital for our mental health, and that uncertainty can have an impact on our emotional wellbeing. There are a lot of unknowns right now which is leaving many feeling anxious or worried. We encourage anyone who is struggling in these challenging times to talk to someone. Our volunteers are available 24 hours a day to provide emotional support to anyone who needs a listening ear.”

Sandra Horley CBE, CEO of Refuge, says: “Since the Government’s request for people to stay at home in March, calls and contacts to Refuge’s National Domestic Abuse Helpline have rocketed by 66 per cent, with visits to our website rising ten-fold. As restrictions slowly lift and an end to lockdown is in sight, it’s important to remember that for women living with abusive partners, their experiences of isolation do not begin and end with the lockdown and many of them will continue to experience abuse. Our message to each and every woman who needs our support, and any concerned friends or family, is clear – the expert female staff on the Freephone National Domestic Abuse Helpline is here for you twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. You are not alone.”

Andy Langford, Cruse Bereavement Care Clinical Director says: “The coronavirus pandemic has meant it is an incredibly distressing time to be grieving, whenever your bereavement occurred. Many people have been grieving in isolation, unable to attend funerals, say goodbye, and be close to those they love. When you feel you have no control over how you can experience those last moments with someone, this can have a profound impact on the grieving process.

Our advice to people who are struggling has always been to reach out and speak to someone. That hasn’t changed. Our Freephone National Helpline has been operating as normal throughout the pandemic, and we would encourage anyone who feels they need support to get in touch, when they are ready. We are here to listen.”

Support from other helplines can also be found with the ‘Find a Helpline’ tool from Helplines Partnership: https://helplines.org/helplines/

Leading national gambling support charity GamCare has launched an online course for people concerned about their gambling behaviour. The new GameChange course, commissioned by GambleAware, is based on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and participants are supported by regular contact with a GamCare therapist.

GamCare has seen considerable interest since soft launching the software, from people who are generally not accessing other forms of support or treatment. GameChange allows people to access support from wherever is convenient, working at their own pace to change their relationship with gambling. The course has been designed by Swedish responsible gambling software company Sustainable Interaction, who previously developed the GamTest screening assessment incorporated into the GamCare website, and has been adapted for UK clients by GamCare.

GamCare operates the National Gambling Helpline (Freephone and live chat) to provide information, advice and support to those affected by gambling problems, as well as providing a range of face-to-face, online and telephone treatment services for gamblers and their loved ones. The charity is innovating in order to provide a greater choice of services for people who may not engage with existing treatment programmes.

The UK Gambling Commission estimates that around 340,000 people may already experience harm because of their gambling in Great Britain, while up to 2 million more could be at risk of developing problems with gambling1. At present, around 10,000 people a year access the help and support offered by GamCare and other organisations commissioned by GambleAware to provide support and treatment services across England, Scotland and Wales, plus around 30,000 people access the National Gambling Helpline.

Anna Hemmings, CEO at GamCare, says: “There may be a variety of reasons why more traditional treatment services may not suit everyone – time pressures and other responsibilities, mobility or communication issues, or perhaps feeling more comfortable accessing online services.

GamCare aims to provide a range of accessible, expert support so that we can provide the right help at the right time to prevent issues from escalating, and our new GameChange course is an integral part of our continually developing digital offer.”

The course is designed to be completed over eight weeks. Modules have been designed to be completed in the client’s own time, with a check-in with a GamCare therapist over the phone when each module is completed.

Helen Garratt, Director of Clinical Services at GamCare, says: “Gambling is sometimes described as a ‘hidden addiction’, as it can be hard to spot a problem developing and many people find themselves becoming isolated from the people around them. The chances of recovery are good with help and support in place, and our new course is designed to easily fit into our client’s lives so that they can successfully change their relationship with gambling and make positive choices for their future.”

Christofer Hagstedt from Sustainable Interaction says: “GamCare has implemented an end-to-end digital approach to provide interventions and treatment to at-risk players and those experiencing harm, using the products that we at Sustainable Interaction supply. Seeing our self-assessment test, GamTest, our micro interventions and our CCBT treatment program all implemented as a digital pathway to provide the best possible help is really a fantastic step.”

John McCracken, Director of Commissioning at GambleAware, says: “As part of our ongoing work to expand the range of treatment options offered by the National Gambling Treatment Service, we are pleased to have commissioned this vital new service, which is designed to meet the needs of people who prefer to access help online. It is a cost effective, accessible and sustainable way of helping those who experience gambling harms, which fits with the direction of travel in mental health treatment more widely and has a good evidence base internationally. Through robust evaluation of GameChange we will begin to establish an evidence-base here in Britain around digital interventions to address gambling harms.”

GameChange is available online now for residents in Great Britain via https://www.gamcare.org.uk/self-help/gamechange/

GambleAware:

GambleAware is an independent charity (Charity No. England & Wales 1093910, Scotland SC049433) that champions a public health approach to preventing gambling harms – see http://about.gambleaware.org/
GambleAware is a commissioner of integrated prevention, education and treatment services on a national scale, with over £40 million of grant funding under active management. In partnership with gambling treatment providers, GambleAware has spent several years methodically building structures for commissioning a coherent system of brief intervention and treatment services, with clearly defined care pathways and established referral routes to and from the NHS – a National Gambling Treatment Service.
The National Gambling Treatment Service brings together a National Gambling Helpline and a network of locally-based providers across Great Britain that works with partner agencies and people with lived experience to design and deliver a system, which meets the needs of individuals. This system delivers a range of treatment services, including brief intervention, counselling (delivered either face-to-face or online), residential programmes and psychiatrist-led care.
In the 12 months to 31 March 2019, provisional figures show that the National Gambling Treatment Service treated 10,000 people and this is projected to rise to 24,000 people a year by 2021. Helpline activity is currently running at about 30,000 calls and on-line chats per annum. GambleAware also runs the website BeGambleAware.org which helps 4.2 million visitors a year, and signposts to a wide range of support services.
GambleAware produces public health campaigns including Bet Regret. A Safer Gambling Board, including representatives from Public Health England, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, and GambleAware, is responsible for the design and delivery of a campaign based on best practice in public health education. The Bet Regret campaign is being funded through specific, additional donations to the charity, in line with a commitment given to the government by the broadcasting, advertising and gambling industries.

Leading national gambling support charity GamCare is launching new Relapse Prevention Support Groups to provide additional aftercare for those struggling with gambling problems. New groups will be available in person and online, offering a space for individuals to discuss their ongoing gambling recovery with others in similar situations.

GamCare is the leading provider of information, advice and support for anyone affected by gambling problems. In the last year they have helped more than 9,000 people through their online, face-to-face and telephone treatment services, as well as receiving nearly 30,000 calls to the National Gambling Helpline (available through Freephone and live chat), which has recently extended its hours to become a 24-hour a day service.

These new support groups have been created as clients highlighted a need for more peer-based conversations alongside the aftercare options already provided by GamCare. The groups will encourage peer-led discussions, with the assistance of a practitioner, to discuss recovery and create a support network to those who are just leaving or would like to refresh their treatment.

Candice Donn, Head of Clinical Services at GamCare, says: “Sharing lived experience can be an important part of recovery for many gamblers. These new groups aim to provide spaces where a network of peers can come together to have honest and open discussions about their experiences, supporting one another to enhance and maintain their recovery.”

Brigitte Martins, Team Leader at GamCare London, says: “Being able to talk to people who have been through similar experiences helps to break down feelings of shame and loneliness that can surround someone struggling with gambling. These groups will allow individuals to feel more understood, and allow them to see how possible it is to change their relationship with gambling.”

Matt Blanks, Peer Aid Coordinator at BetKnowMore, working in partnership GamCare, says: "Knowing that I have someone to turn to in hard times means so much to me, especially being able to reach out and find help from another who has also faced gambling related harm. Seeing where they are in their journey gives me such inspiration and fills me with hope and positivity, a feeling that this group can give to others as well.”

GamCare also provides aftercare support through specialist practitioners to prevent and overcome relapses where needed.

New Relapse Prevention Groups will be held face to face in London, as well as online, on Tuesdays from 6pm-7pm. Anyone who would like to attend can contact 0207 801 7008 or email London@gamcare.org.uk.

Media InformationImmediate Release30th October 2019People who gamble too much can experience a range of financial impacts, including debt, which in turn can lead to adverse impacts on relationships and mental wellbeing.

In response to this, key sectors including banking, debt advice, gambling treatment, and the gambling industry have launched various initiatives and resources. These include steps to address issues of financial capability amongst customers, tools to identify and support individuals experiencing financial harm, as well as guidelines for how much is an ‘affordable’ amount to spend on gambling. Until now, these activities have mostly gone on independently of one another.

GamCare, the leading national provider of gambling support, has launched a new initiative to facilitate collaboration for those working to address gambling related financial harm with a cross-sector approach. GamCare’s objective is to maximise the effectiveness of work undertaken to tackle gambling related financial harm across all sectors and to ensure that consumers are receiving consistent, timely and accurate advice and support from organisations across these fields. The project will create a range resources that are focused on the needs of individuals experiencing gambling related financial harm, including best practice guidance for organisations in these sectors, training packages and consistent and up to date messaging.

The Advisory Panel, which will steer the direction of the activity, includes representatives from HSBC, NatWest, Santander, Citizens Advice, Playtech, The Remote Gambling Association, the Senet Group, the Money and Pensions Service, and Payplan, as well as individuals with lived experience of gambling related financial harm.

Megan Pengelly, Programme Manager at GamCare, says: “Each year, around two thirds of the people we speak to on the National Gambling HelpLine disclose some form of debt and related financial difficulties because of their own gambling, or because of a loved one’s gambling.

There is increasing recognition from different sectors that many of their customers struggle with gambling-related financial harms and that collectively we must consider better advice and consumer protections to reduce the financial harms that gambling may cause.

GamCare is bringing together champions from across these four sectors to coordinate the development of best practice, and to create a suite of resources and training which will ensure that consumers receive timely advice and support to reduce potential harms.”

Rachel Duffey, CEO of PayPlan, commented: “PayPlan is happy to be a part of this collective network, in the push to tackle gambling-related financial harms. The number of people who voluntarily disclosed a gambling addiction to us rose by over 280% between 2015 and 2018, so it’s vital that we have appropriate and accessible support in place for them.”

Neil Wainwright, Customer Protection Manager at NatWest, said: “We’re very pleased to be a part of the Gambling Related Financial Harm Advisory Panel. We recognise the role banks and credit organisations play in supporting and protecting problem gamblers in the UK, and we’re working hard to ensure we can provide the best specialist advice and services to customers affected.

We’re looking forward to working with representatives of the Advisory Group to encourage deeper understanding of the financial harm that gamblers and their families can face and develop best practice support to help those who want to stop”.

Senior policy and propositions manager at the Money and Pensions Service, Valentine Mulholland, said: “Problem gambling can leave people with chronic and acute personal debt. While money guidance and debt advice can highlight problems the current systems of referring and helping people are not always as effective as they should be. I look forward to contributing to this important work to develop better solutions to reduce the long-term damage problem gambling can do to people’s financial health and overall wellbeing.”

Ian Ince, Head of Regulatory Affairs and Compliance at Playtech said: “We are delighted to support and partner with GamCare on this important programme. GamCare’s initiativedemonstrates the power and importance of cross sector collaboration to deliver consistent, scaleable and impactful programmes that support financial wellbeing and advance the National Strategy to Reduce Gambling Harms.”

The programme will also engage a wider network of organisations to contribute to the growing knowledge base, develop new ideas and test new resources. To be kept up to date or if your organisation would like to participate, contact Raminta Diliso raminta.diliso@gamcare.org.uk.

The National Gambling HelpLine, operated by GamCare and funded by GambleAware, is extending its hours and will now operate 24-hours a day from the 1st October 2019.

Available via a Freephone number as well as web chat , the National Gambling HelpLine provides advice, information and support around the clock to those suffering from gambling related harm, whether their own or someone else’s. In 2018/9, the National Gambling Helpline, on 0808 8020 133, received over 30,000 calls, and this figure is rising year on year.

The Gambling Commission estimates there are around 340,000 problem gamblers nationally, with up to 2 million at risk of developing a gambling issue. A wide range of gambling activities are now available throughout the night, a time when people experiencing problems may feel the most isolated. The new extended helpline hours reflect this degree of availability and will mean that expert support is available 24/7, every day of the year, to those who need it.

GamCare Advisers respond to caller’s needs, giving them space to listen and explore their issues in confidence. Advisers can provide support online, by telephone and, should people want them to, they can also connect callers with local treatment services.

Anna Hemmings, CEO at GamCare, says: “It is important that treatment and support services reflect the availability of gambling. As such, we are delighted to be able to extend the hours of operation of the National Gambling Helpline to further support those affected by gambling related harm. With the 24-hour nature of gambling, people sometimes feel at their most isolated overnight, when other support services are closed. They will now be able to reach our highly trained advisers 24 hours a day, who can offer immediate support, advice and referral to our network of treatment services nationally.”

Helen Garratt, Director of Clinical Services, says: “GamCare provides a wide range of services to people in need, and we are very pleased that the helpline hours can now extend this support throughout the night. People can be trying hard to change their gambling, but the sheer availability of gambling options makes it a struggle. We hope that the new availability of the National Gambling Helpline will be able to match this round-the-clock activity and offer even more support.”

Marc Etches, CEO of GambleAware, says: “GambleAware is responsible for commissioning the National Gambling Helpline, which is a core element of an emerging National Gambling Treatment Service. Our priority is to keep people safe and to ensure support services are easily accessible. As such, we are pleased to be funding an extension to the helpline’s operating hours, and we will evaluate its performance over time.”

Tim Miller, Executive Director at the Gambling Commission, says: “The pilot to extend the hours of the National Gambling Helpline is a very welcome step. GamCare’s specialist advisers are now there if people need support at any hour of the day. This change arose out of the input of people with lived experience into research and demonstrates why that continued input is vital.”

The National Gambling Helpline will be running 24-hours a day from the 1st October.

<![CDATA[ New integrated gambling support services launches in Leeds ]]> https://pressat.co.uk/releases/new-integrated-gambling-support-services-launches-in-leeds-1f43a925451c4a735572075942209583/ https://pressat.co.uk/releases/new-integrated-gambling-support-services-launches-in-leeds-1f43a925451c4a735572075942209583/ Wednesday 18 September, 2019

A new, fully integrated support service for people with gambling problems is launching in Leeds.

The Leeds Community Gambling Service is the first gambling support service of its kind and involves an ambitious collaboration between leading gambling support charity GamCare, Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (LYPFT) and Leeds City Council.

The new integrated service in Leeds is being funded by national charity GambleAware, and will form part of the wider NHS Northern Gambling Service funded by NHS England.

The NHS Northern Gambling Service will provide care for those with severe addictions, and provide treatment and support for people with additional and complex mental health conditions, impaired social functioning, and those who may present with more risk - such as a risk of suicide. Services will also support family and friends who have been impacted by gambling harms.

In Leeds local residents will benefit from additional prevention, education and treatment for gambling harm provided by GamCare. They will deliver training, outreach and prevention work across the Leeds area to ensure that other local services are aware of how gambling problems may impact their clients, as well as how they can seamlessly refer into dedicated support services. Training will also benefit local primary care and local authority staff in identifying people in need of help and support at all stages – be it before entering treatment, during or after.

GamCare and LYPFT have taken a unified approach to make sure people across the whole spectrum of need are able to access the necessary help and support quickly and easily. The variety of services available will also provide organisations with much-needed insight to help continuously improve treatment for gambling problems elsewhere across the UK.

Marc Etches, Chief Executive of GambleAware says:

“Our aim is to prevent people getting into problems with their gambling, all the while making sure that those who do develop problems receive fast and effective treatment and support. We are delighted to be commissioning this new integrated service, delivered by Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust in partnership with GamCare. These new services will play a vital role in making sure those with more serious and complex needs linked to gambling, will have quick access to free, fast and effective treatment, wherever they may be. We very much look forward to seeing this clinic open and we would welcome the opportunity to potentially replicate this approach in other areas of the UK in the future”

Anna Hemmings, CEO at GamCare, says:

“A wide range of needs arise from gambling-related harms, which can impact on mental health and wellbeing and often creates a sense of isolation for those affected. The range of services we provide can significantly improve quality of life and reduce the adverse impacts of gambling.

For those affected by disordered gambling, our treatment services can offer valuable support and we’d encourage people to get in touch as early as possible, not to let problems build up and get to crisis point.

GamCare is delighted to work in partnership with the NHS to deliver these services so that we can collectively have greater impact and reduce the harms caused through gambling.”

Matt Gaskell, Consultant Psychologist & Clinical Lead for Addictions, Leeds and York Partnership Foundation NHS Trusts, says:

“Through my work in mental health and addictions treatment over the years I’ve seen the harms that problem gambling can inflict on people. I’m proud to be involved in this much needed service. It is vital that we work together to provide a range of accessible and effective services to reduce these harms.

Our services in Leeds and across the North of England will provide specialist addiction support and treatment to people affected by gambling addiction or disorder, as well as those with more complex mental health problems such as depression and suicidal feelings.”

Local GamCare treatment partner NECA and Leeds City Council championed and showed strong leadership and enthusiasm for the new treatment service to be housed in the city. This interest, plus the commitment to work collaboratively with the NHS and voluntary sectors to deliver support, raise awareness and develop more referral routes into treatment, heavily influenced the decision to host the service in the area.

Councillor Debra Coupar, Leeds City Council Deputy Leader and executive member for communities, says:

“Research shows that 10,000 people in Leeds are affected by problem gambling. We know that problem gambling is now a public health issue which can damage people’s lives, significantly affect their health and have a huge impact on families, loved ones, and communities.

“Leeds prides itself on being a compassionate city. As a council we recognise the importance of taking a partnership approach to developing services which support vulnerable people and improve the health of the poorest the fastest. These innovative gambling support services are an important step forward in providing the education, training and support which is so desperately needed.”

Leeds was selected as a suitable central hub location for gambling support services across the North of England as it will complement the existing GambleAware funded NHS National Gambling Treatment Service in London.

GambleAware also runs the website BeGambleAware.org which helps 2.7 million visitors a year, and signposts to a wide range of support services.
GambleAware produces public health campaigns including Bet Regret. A Safer Gambling Board, including representatives from Public Health England, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, and GambleAware, is responsible for the design and delivery of a campaign based on best practice in public health education. The Bet Regret campaign is being funded through specific, additional donations to the charity, in line with a commitment given to the government by the broadcasting, advertising and gambling industries.See https://about.gambleaware.org/prevention/safer-gambling-campaign/.

Young people in [XXX region] will now receive targeted education to highlight the risks of gambling. GamCare - the leading charity providing information, advice and support for anyone affected by problem gambling - is expanding its Youth Outreach Programme across England, Scotland and Wales after securing additional funding for two years.

The programme offers free interactive workshops to young people aged 11 – 19 as well as free training to youth-facing professionals. Following a successful evaluation of this work so far, GamCare will expand its existing programme from five regions to eight.

Megan Pengelly, GamCare Risk Reduction Programmes Manager, says: “Our Youth Outreach Programme has reached more than 7,500 young people so far, as well as a further 2,000 professionals working to support them, such as teachers, youth workers and third sector representatives. We are excited about the impact we can make through the expansion of our programme.”

Anna Hemmings, CEO at GamCare, says: “Our risk reduction programmes provide targeted engagement and support for groups at higher risk of harms because of gambling. We are proud of the good work we’ve been able to do, and we are happy to be able to expand our work with young people to help to minimise the impacts of gambling-related harms felt by individuals, families and communities in years to come.”

Genting Casinos are the first gambling company to achieve the Safer Gambling Standard, the social responsibility quality standard for the gambling industry developed by national charity GamCare. Genting has achieved the highest level of award following a thorough assessment.

The Safer Gambling Standard recognises gambling operators who go above and beyond the requirements of gambling industry Licensing Codes and Conditions of Practice (LCCP). The Standard comprises 10 sets of assessment criteria for social responsibility for both online and land-based gambling businesses, developed and updated each year out of the available evidence, industry best-practice, and input from those who have experienced gambling related harm. The Standard is awarded at an entry level and at three Advanced Levels, giving operators a clear roadmap for improvement.

As the leading provider of problem gambling support across Great Britain, GamCare is working to minimise gambling-related harm and to drive up overall standards of social responsibility practice across the gambling industry, making gambling safer for consumers.

The wide-reaching new Standard reviews organisational policies and procedures, digital and in-person interactions with customers, protections for young and vulnerable people, training and development, and the culture of the business regarding its approach to social responsibility.

Paul Carpenter, GamCare Head of Industry Services, says: “Genting achieved the highest level of the Standard as the company was able to evidence a clear strategic focus on continuous improvement in the area of minimising gambling harms. This approach included trialing different ways in identifying and interacting with customers who may be exhibiting behaviors that indicate they may have a problem with their gambling or be at risk of developing a gambling problem.

Genting’s approach to social responsibility was tested through on-site and remote assessments of their website and back office systems, plus interviews with staff and management at all levels and at different locations within the company’s land-based and online business operations.”

Paul Wilcock, President and Chief Operating Officer at Genting UK, says: “Operating responsibly is incredibly important to us as an organisation. It’s central to everything we do now and everything we will do in the future. We are constantly reviewing our responsible gaming measures to ensure they remain amongst the most robust in the industry.

We want our customers to enjoy playing in a safe environment and to be the first gambling operator to achieve this standard is recognition of the ongoing work we do to prioritise the wellbeing of our customers.

I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to my team who go above and beyond to ensure we offer a safe gaming experience. Without their continued hard work this would not have been possible.”

<![CDATA[ GamCare Receives over £1million in Tampon Tax Funding to Reach Vulnerable Women ]]> https://pressat.co.uk/releases/gamcare-receives-over-1million-in-tampon-tax-funding-to-reach-vulnerable-women-2518d70143575572c22881e436323664/ https://pressat.co.uk/releases/gamcare-receives-over-1million-in-tampon-tax-funding-to-reach-vulnerable-women-2518d70143575572c22881e436323664/ Thursday 28 March, 2019

National problem gambling support charity, GamCare, has received £1,191,818 from the Tampon Tax Fund to enable the organisation to reach more vulnerable women affected by gambling problems across England, Scotland and Wales.

Each year around 30% of callers to the National Gambling HelpLine, an advice and support line provided by GamCare, are women, and the number of calls has increased significantly over the last 5 years. Approximately half of women call about their own gambling and half about someone else’s gambling, and around 21% of clients in GamCare treatment services are female.

Funding gathered from taxes on feminine hygiene products is now made available to charities and organisations working to tackle serious issues affecting women across the UK. GamCare will benefit from this round of funding and will be able to increase awareness of gambling related harm and access to support available to women nationally.

Anna Hemmings, CEO at GamCare, says: “Women can be disproportionately negatively impacted by gambling related harms, which include financial, relationship and mental health issues.

There is also an evidence base to suggest that for women, emotional distress, experience of trauma or managing other difficult situations such as domestic abuse, sexual violence or other pressures can make them vulnerable to experiencing gambling problems themselves.

These problems can cause a sense of isolation and have far reaching impacts on their families, communities and personal lives; however they are often hidden from support services.”

GamCare will work with a nationwide network of organisations who support vulnerable women, raising awareness of how gambling is linked with a range of issues affecting women and girls and helping to better identify women in need – including those affected by domestic abuse, care leavers and victims of modern slavery.

The charity will strengthen referral pathways into support and treatment services as well as providing tailored treatment options in consultation with service users. They will also engage with academic partners to gather and interrogate data from screening and treatment services to ensure continuous improvement.

GamCare operates the National Gambling HelpLine, providing information, advice and support for anyone affected by problem gambling. Advisers are available seven days a week from 8am – Midnight on Freephone 0808 8020 133 or via web chat at www.gamcare.org.uk.

GamCare and their partner agencies also offer a range of free treatment across England, Scotland and Wales, as well as a moderated Forum and daily chatrooms so that people can speak to others experiencing similar issues and seek support.

GamCare, the leading provider of information, advice, and support for the prevention and treatment of problem gambling, will be using ICE London 2019 as a platform to launch the new Safer Gambling Standard, a social responsibility quality standard for the gambling industry.

The GamCare team will be on hand in the Consumer Protection Zone to talk people through the Standard and how it will drive up overall standards of social responsibility practice across the gambling industry, making gambling safer for consumers.

The new accreditation sets out to recognise gambling operators who go above and beyond the requirements of gambling industry Codes of Practice. The Standard comprises 10 sets of assessment criteria for social responsibility across online and land-based B2C operations. GamCare is also developing a variation of the Standard for B2B operators and will be available to talk through how to take this forward.

The wide-reaching new Standard has been designed to review organisational policies and procedures, digital and in-person interactions, protections for young and vulnerable people, and the culture of the business regarding its approach to social responsibility.

GamCare is looking to work with gambling operators that want to lead the way in evidencing that safer gambling is at the heart of their businesses. Joining Genting UK plc as the first operators to embark on the accreditation process are bet365, Betsson Group, Buzz Group, Camelot UK Lotteries Ltd, In Touch Games, JPJ plc and Paddy Power Betfair, with more operators coming on board daily.

Mike Kenward, GamCare Development Director, says: “ICE London is the heart of the industry and the place where the conversation about consumer protection and customer welfare should be happening. We will be announcing the rollout of the new Standard in the Consumer Protection Zone.”

Paul Carpenter, GamCare Head of Industry Services, says: “More and more gambling operators are realising that protecting customers from experiencing gambling related harm is key to running an ethical and sustainable business. We want gambling operators to embrace the Safer Gambling Standard, not just for the business and reputational benefits of doing so, but because demonstrating an effective approach to safer gambling is the right thing to do.”

Anna Hemmings, CEO at GamCare, says: “For responsible gambling measures to be effective, it is essential that they are integrated into organisational culture and flow throughout the organisation. The Safer Gambling Standard focuses on the totality of an operation, from board members and directors down to the front line. The standard is an accreditation which incorporates the experience of our service users, the huge level of collected evidence and industry research across numerous fields as well as GamCare’s many years of experience working across the sector."

GamCare also emphasizes the importance of delivering comprehensive gambling related training to individuals and organisations and are looking forward to talking to operators about their full range of training programmes.

The National Gambling HelpLine, operated by national problem gambling support charity GamCare, has again been awarded the Helplines Standard after assessment from the Helplines Partnership, the membership body for organisations that provide helpline services.

The Helplines Standard identifies the practices that enable an organisation to deliver a helpline service which is consistent, relevant to the needs of its stakeholders and effective in what it is trying to achieve.

Upon successful completion, accreditation to the Helplines Standard is awarded for three years. After 18 months, each organisation is required to undergo a certification process committing its continued adherence to the standards, processes and procedures observed during the original assessment.

The Helplines Partnership said: “The National Gambling Helpline is a long running, well-established and good quality service, however there is also a clear commitment to continuous development to meet emerging needs. The safety of those with whom it comes into contact is treated as an intrinsic part of the helpline’s work, and there is evidence of a strong commitment to effective partnerships to ensure callers get the best care. The Helplines Partnership congratulates those involved with the submission process for producing a comprehensive evidence portfolio.”

<![CDATA[ Young People’s Problem Gambling Outreach Programme Celebrates First Year Success ]]> https://pressat.co.uk/releases/young-peoples-problem-gambling-outreach-programme-celebrates-first-year-success-77a7048f00eac3f907bd3e91938765ce/ https://pressat.co.uk/releases/young-peoples-problem-gambling-outreach-programme-celebrates-first-year-success-77a7048f00eac3f907bd3e91938765ce/ Friday 22 June, 2018

National problem gambling support charity GamCare has published headline findings from the first-year evaluation of its Youth Outreach Programme, aiming to raise awareness of youth problem gambling and educate young people and the professionals working with them about the risks associated with gambling.

At least 1 in 9 young people aged 11 - 16 in the UK engage in some form of gambling each week (IPSOS Mori 2017). The financial, social and mental health impacts of gambling are a major area of safeguarding concern for young people, as many engage with gambling while lacking context around these activities.

Currently working in four regions of Great Britain, GamCare’s Youth Outreach programme has delivered free, interactive awareness workshops to more than 2,500 young people aged 11 - 19, and free ‘identification and brief advice‘ training to more than 750 professionals in London, Birmingham, Bristol, and Manchester/Liverpool.

The programme has been evaluated independently by LKMco, who found that 91% of the young people who have taken part in workshops so far reported increased awareness and knowledge to make safer choices around gambling by the end of their session, while 91% of professionals reported never having received training on this topic before and that improved knowledge of warning signs as a result of GamCare training had impacted positively on their practice. When contacted three months after their training, most felt they were more likely to be able to identify a problem early after attending the workshop, and would know where to signpost to.

The programme is also supported by a dedicated website for young people at www.bigdeal.org.uk. The website relaunched in September 2017 and has since seen more than 11,500 unique users access information about gambling and problem gambling, plus interactive resources and forums where young people can share their own experiences.

Megan Pengelly, Youth Outreach Co-ordinator at GamCare, says: “This has been a brilliant year for the programme and we look forward to expanding, with even more interactive and relevant materials for young people and professionals being developed over the coming year. While young people receive no formal education about gambling, our programme ensures that they are given the facts and can make informed decisions, and that the professionals supporting them are skilled to offer the best support possible.”

The programme will now be expanding to include a dedicated youth hub in Hull, as well as launching an increased offer for professionals including a one-hour taster session alongside their CPD accredited three-hour sessions.
