The Museum
of Witchcraft and Magic has invited Bioart Coven
founder WhiteFeather Hunter to curate its 2024 exhibition.



A Canadian
technofeminist transdisciplinary artist and scholar
working in a multiplicity of media, which often operate
without conventional notions of art, science and magical
practice; Dr Hunter has recently completed a PhD in Biological
Art at Symbiotica, The  University of Western Australia.



Her doctoral
research into developing a novel menstrual serum for tissue
engineering experiments was spotlighted by Merck/ Sigma-Aldrich for
International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2021 as part of
their #nextgreatimpossible campaign:
her work has received many awards and accolades.



Several
of her works, which debuted last year at Art Laboratory
Berlin, were produced as part of Hunter’s doctoral research in
tissue engineering and laboratory magic using human stem cells
derived from taboo body materials—all within the context
of contemporary feminist witchcraft.



She
returns to the Museum to install an exhibition showcasing
her recent works, along with selected objects from the museum
and other prestigious collections including Genesis
P.Orridge's / Sigil for Derek Jarman, and mysterious material
from the hermetic Richel-Eldermans Collection.



The
exhibition, Arcanum Sanguinis: Occult Blood will
span the downstairs gallery and upper floor display rooms and will
also include a video / textile piece she produced during
her previous residency in 2022. Worked as a complex
composite combining digital and organic
matter, Palimpsest presages her later work
via its interrogation of MWM archival material
transmitted to the audience as tactile ghost pages, representing her
scholarly approach to research.



For Arcanum
Sanguinis, Hunter’s curation of museum objects and
artefacts that accompany her work speak to the symbolism, beliefs and
practices that have underpinned the development of the discipline of biomedicine
over the centuries. Though ‘magic’ and ‘science’ are often
imagined to be opposing realms, Hunter has arranged a visual thematic
narrative to show some of the subtle overlaps that exist between
them, purposing the coalescence of material in unexpected ways.


Hunter’s machine embroidered and blood-stained lab coat
complements a hand-embroidered ritual robe that features a caduceus
symbol. The caduceus, a double-snake helical arrangement around a
staff originates from ancient fertility goddess worship but is now
best known for its association with medical institutions.



Considerable
attention has been given to the proven parallels between art and
magical practice, to the extent that they may in fact
seem quite commonplace. Little attention has been awarded
to the correspondences betwixt scientific practice and magic. In
the instances that they exist, they are considered to
be taboo ...by The Academy.

Sanguinis: Occult Blood, Hunter shows that from folk magic
to alchemy to contemporary biotechnological advance, our cultural
perceptions of health and the body have always been moderated through
ritual and influenced by biopolitics.

UK Men’s Sheds Association (UKMSA) will erect a Men’s Shed at Portcullis House in the Palace of Westminster estate from 18th
to the 22nd March 2024 in a drive to raise awareness of men’s wellbeing and the Men’s Shed movement.


‘The Parliament Shed’ has been custom-built and is designed to highlight the health, wellbeing and social benefits of community-run Men’s Sheds and the key areas where Sheds make an impact.


Expert partners from partners and shedders such as the Zero Suicide Alliance and the Centre for Ageing Better will join UKMSA and shedders from around the UK to explain the causes and promote the benefits of their work. Topics include: Suicide Prevention, Mental Health, Men’s Health and Loneliness.


With over 1,100 Men’s Sheds across the UK and over 33,000 ‘Shedders’, the UKMSA aims to use this platform to engage with people working in the parliamentary estate and government to raise the profile of the Men’s Sheds movement, and highlight the causes and partners engaged at the event.

Whether it is a Shed building bird boxes or mending football boots and bikes to give to disadvantaged children in their communities, you can see a real pride and sense of achievement in everyone who comes through the door of a Shed.’

Everyone plays a part in preventing seemingly ‘harmless’ attitudes and behaviour from perpetuating violence against women and girls.



White Ribbon UK welcomes the publication of the Angiolini Inquiry, Part 1 Report on 29th February 2024, and the recommendations set out.


As the leading organisation engaging men and boys to prevent violence against women and girls by challenging harmful attitudes and behaviours, we particularly welcome Recommendation 14 calling on police forces to commit publicly “to being an anti-sexist, anti-misogynistic, anti-racist organisation in order to address, understand and eradicate sexism, racism and misogyny, contributing to a wider positive culture to remove all forms of discrimination from the profession.”


Seemingly ‘harmless’ attitudes and behaviour that are sexist, misogynist and abusive can no longer be qualified as ‘a joke’ or said in a way which ‘means no harm’.


Anthea Sully, Chief Executive of White Ribbon UK shares, “These comments and behaviours perpetuate a culture of violence that all men should be challenging and rejecting. It is men’s responsibility to call out dangerous attitudes and positively influence their friends and colleagues to contribute to a safer society for women.”

Living Memories Online, an innovative UK web portal offering archive films and reminiscence resources, developed by Devon based non-profit Living Memories C.I.C., is helping volunteers to use the joy of reminiscing to help reduce the isolation of older family members, neighbours, care home residents and local communities.


Academic studies show that reminiscence provides cognitive, social, and emotional benefits to older adults, including those living with dementia. It can also help them to build new friendships and reduce loneliness through sharing memories.


Reminiscence activities that incorporate multi-media such as archive films and photographs can be particularly stimulating, along with music, dancing, toys and memorabilia.


The Living Memories Online portal also provides the opportunity for subscribers to create their own collections of favourite films and share them with family members and friends who have also subscribed to the portal, whether they live in the UK or overseas.


Volunteers and activity co-ordinators can help in care and residential homes and help with Tea and Memories reminiscence groups in-person or virtually where older people can view, discuss, and share memories sparked by the archive footage. Volunteers also provide invaluable social contact and mental stimulation to participants.


As one volunteer shared, "It's amazing to watch an older adult who seems withdrawn who lights up when a familiar scene or object from their past comes up on screen. Pretty soon they can't stop talking and engaging with the group."

Leading Greater Manchester based male sexual abuse charity, We Are Survivors (formally Survivors Manchester) has today announced the award of an NHS England contract to deliver trauma-informed talking therapy to survivors in custody across the fifteen North West prisons.


At the same time as the charity celebrates its 15th Birthday year (beginning 05.02.2024), it also secures over £3.5m in funds to deliver the OUT Spoken Talking Therapy Service, developed by the organisation, to prisoners dealing with their own victimhood/survivorship whom have often never spoken about their early life abusive experiences.


In 2022-23, the OUT Spoken service received over 950 referrals, 61% coming directly from prisoners themselves, seeking change.


Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Duncan Craig OBE, states:


“I am so proud that we have been awarded this contract by NHS England securing our service for the next 5 to 7 years. We have worked so hard over the past decade to establish our presence in Prison and have supported the prison service and Governors since the tsunami of disclosures by adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse following the ITV documentary on Saville”


As a survivor himself, Duncan knows the feeling of holding onto a secret for many years and so it was no surprise to him that survivors who had remained silent for over 20 years suddenly began to make a noise at that point:


“there were so many men and women in our prison system that had been put into silence at the time of being abused and then pushed to the edges of society where no one looked, and then when a national conversation began about the long term impact of sexual abuse, they saw their opportunity to get rid of the secret they were carrying and spoke out. This was something that had not happened in the prison estate before in such a way”


Since the organisation’s OUT Spoken service began in early 2020, at the very start of the COVID pandemic, the organisation has delivered 9494 hours of therapy; engaged 2334 amount of prisoners in support; and provided 30 training sessions to experienced and new prison staff on working with adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse, rape and sexual exploitation.


We Are Survivors Criminal Justice Services Director, Alison Lloyd, has led the OUT Spoken project from the start and more recently developed a therapeutic education group that builds prisoners understanding of the impact of trauma on themselves, in the hope that more individuals understand what happened to them and how their actions can also have devastating impact on others. Alison states:


“It has been a privilege to be part of the HMP Deerbolt pilot and work alongside phenomenal and inspirational colleagues. The young men who attended the programme showed us all how important these spaces are if we are going to give people a second chance to change their lives. Their bravery and trust is something I personally will never forget”

In 2024, the very first Routemaster bus, RM1, will be seventy years old and to commemorate this significant anniversary the Routemaster Association will be staging RM70 a special free event at Chiswick Park in London over the weekend of the 20th and 21st July 2024.


Now mostly in private hands many surviving buses will be attending this family event. Visitors will be able to enjoy free rides on the buses between the event site and the London Transport Museum in Acton and for photographers the event presents a unique photo opportunity with a line-up of 70 Routemasters on display.


Ten years ago in 2014 The Routemaster Association held RM60 in Finsbury Park, this event attracted thousands of visitors. Over 130 Routemasters attended with some buses travelling to the event from Europe.


Chiswick Park was chosen for RM70 due to the site’s historical connection with the Routemaster bus. Before today’s modern business park was built the site was home to one of London Transport’s main bus overhaul works and was famous for being the place where trainee drivers were put through their paces on its impressive skid pan.

The provocative theory presented in the book “Sex On the Wrong Brain” as well as website and screenplay of the same name suggests recent worldwide increases in racism, misogyny, and anti-democratic extremism blamed on COVID pandemic lockdowns and isolation are fueled by misplaced reproductive energy.



“When the health agencies of New York City and Australian states NSW and Queensland suggested masturbation as a safe sex alternative during the COVID pandemic they should have specified which hand to use,” says author Ard Falten.



Sex on the wrong brain, or SOWB, is presented as a unified theory of thought and behavior based on the simple premise that it makes a difference which hand humans learn sex with. The theory alleges that using the right hand has caused thousands of years of greed, authoritarianism, patriarchy, and war, and is responsible for the mentality that now threatens Earth with global warming.



“COVID-19 was a mass sex on the wrong brain event,” says the author. “Social distancing and lock-downs did what authoritarians always do. Whether it’s Texas or Russia, the Roman or British empires, Nazi Germany, Iran, Saudi Arabia, China, or the Taliban, the underlying purpose to repress sex and control women and reproductive rights is to increase frustration in the right handed men that authoritarian leaders need to serve them.”



According to the theory using the right hand, which is connected to the left brain hemisphere, associates impatient satisfaction-demanding reproductive urges with left brain-dominant thinking that should be patient and objective.



The website claims that when reproductive energy fuels mental processes such as problem solving and logic it pushes for quick easy answers, premature conclusion, and the closure of certainty. It explains that as the need for certainty increases so does the stress and fear caused by sources of uncertainty.



The website points out authoritarianism is closely associated with fear of uncertainty and is sometimes measured with the Uncertainty Avoidance Index. The site introduces the Certainty Deficit Disorder (CDD) as a symptom of sex on the wrong brain and blames it for a wide spectrum of extreme and anti-democratic behavior humans use to reduce and control uncertainty and create certainty. 



The dynamic between certainty and uncertainty is used to explain authoritarianism:



As the need for certainty increases so does fear of sources of uncertainty, such as change, diversity, unpredictability, disorder, and nature.

Authoritarian leaders are required to be certain, confident, decisive, and always right, qualities followers equate with intelligence and strength.
As chaos and uncertainty increase so does the value of the certitude projected by authoritarian leaders and their symbols and organizations.
Authoritarian leaders and ideologies create certainty with order and control and by simplifying the world into binary absolutes such as right and wrong and good and evil, fueling intolerance, bigotry, and extremism.
Complex problems and issues that generate uncertainty, like global warming and immigraton, are typically oversimplified or ignored.
The website claims that associating sex with punishment and guilt helps authoritarians establish thought patterns that redirect reproductive energy to reward and justify creation of non-existent certainty and that can promote deceit, denial, hypocrisy, and sexual dysfunction.

Authoritarians learn to prioritize certainty over truth.

The author suggests understanding the importance of sex on the wrong brain in human thought and history might make artificial intelligence less dangerous.



“Artificial intelligence can reflect human biases and overconfidence. While AIs don’t have hands and reproductive organs, their developers do,” says the author. “Overconfident AIs can be dangerous and that is why uncertainty quantification, or UQ, plays an important role in AI decision making and predictions. AIs can be very certain and very wrong and for medical diagnosis or a self-driving car, for instance, mistakes can be deadly.”



To reach a wider audience the book and a screenplay weave the SOWB theory and implications into a science fiction adventure comedy set in a near future threatened by global warming. UK charity Chief Executive responds to latest Joseph Rowntree Foundation report on poverty

A UK homelessness charity has spoken out about the need to tackle public perceptions about what its like to be homeless and in poverty, as part of the solution to the UK’s growing poverty crisis.


This week, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation released its comprehensive UK Poverty report, revealing for the first time how many thousands of pounds are needed by families to escape poverty, and how that has got worse over time.


The report highlights how around 6 million people were in deep poverty in 2021/22, with 1.5 million of them being children, 3.8 million being working-age adults, and 600,000 being pensioners.


The International Network of Street Papers (INSP) is the UK charity representing The Big Issue and all other all newspapers and magazines worldwide that are working to tackle poverty and homelessness. 92 street papers operate in 35 different countries, providing people in poverty with opportunities to earn a dignified income.


INSP’s Chief Executive, Mike Findlay-Agnew, says: “The latest picture of poverty in the UK is stark. With deep poverty worsening, rising to 3.8 million, the real casualties of the crisis are some of country’s most vulnerable people including, minority ethnic groups, people with disabilities, and lone parent families.


“We all need to wake up to the reality. Poverty is not a hidden part of our society that is ‘over there’, but it impacts a large part of our country’s populations. It’s our colleagues, our friends, our families that are impacted by poverty.


“Despite this, too many people in the UK deny the extent of our poverty problem. This is why tackling perceptions about homelessness and poverty should be part of the solution to this major social issue. Public and media narrative around homelessness and poverty often focusses on a simplistic view of the world, reducing people to unhelpful labels such as ‘benefits scroungers’, or assuming the full extent of the problem is rough sleepers.


“It’s time we changed the narrative and language in relation to homelessness and poverty. We need to be hearing from, learning, and adapting our policies based on the views and experiences of the real experts of poverty: those that have lived through it, first hand. Doing so will allow us to get to grips with the complexity of the issues, and create solutions based on what the harsh reality is for many people living in deep poverty right now.


“Homelessness is a policy choice is a mantra we often hear, highlighting how first world governments sometimes fail to address the issues associated with poverty on their own doorsteps. With the UK’s general election due within the next year, there needs to be political consensus and commitment to take on the issues head-on. Tackling perceptions and changing the narrative around homelessness is an essential part of this.”


Due to the increased prevalence of the poverty crisis globally, more solutions are required to meet the challenges head-on. The International Network of Street Papers (INSP) has confirmed that the Global Street Paper Summit will be hosted in Liverpool in the UK between Monday 9 and Friday 13 September 2024, where international delegates will be invited to debate and discuss solutions to the poverty crisis.

UK Indie band The Pocket Gods have been campaigning for fairer royalties from Spotify since 2015 by releasing a series of 30 second song albums to highlight the issues involved. Spotify pays out a royalty in full after 30 seconds so The Pocket Gods decided as the royalty was so small they might as well just write 30 second songs!


Their last album 1000X30 Nobody Makes Money Anymore had ONE THOUSAND! songs on - each one just 30 seconds long! The album gained them press and fans all around the world, as well as a Guinness World Records, but front person Mark Christopher Lee says;


"It's great we've had nearly 2 million streams of this album but all we have earned for this from Spotify is £400. It's pretty scandalous to be honest. Something needs to be done. The reality is as well it's only going to get worse this year with Spotify introducing a minimum threshold of 1000 listeners before an artist gets paid."


Front person Lee is a voting member of the Recording Academy (The Grammys) in the US and also a member of BPI (British Phonographic Industry) who are being The Brit Awards in the UK. However he adds:


"I shan't be going to the Grammys or The Brits as the whole music industry is basically in denial that there is a problem. As long as the major label artists are raking in billions of streams they're just taking the money and not worries about the long term future of the new and upcoming artists. We're back in the 90's again when the internet first came along and the music industry failed to adapt. Streaming is great but it needs with the help of the music industry to evolve to a new fairer sustainable level."


The Pocket Gods formed in 1998 at Tower Records in London and have released 77 albums and over 5,000 songs in total and gaining high profile champions like Tom Robinson and Seymour Stein along the way.

The band have released a film about their campaign called Inspired The 30 Second Song Movie and it's out now on Amazon Prime.

In the UK over 160,000 people are homeless. Just off London's Oxford Street, in fashionable Mayfair village, a homeless film director and London band has teamed up with Rap Royalty's Snoop Dogg to end homelessness now. When the hip hop beats of Hard Times and Snoop Dogg's inimitable flow reached the ears of 87 year old Pope Francis he loved it so much he issued, there and then, a Papal Blessing for the charitable endeavour.

Homeless film director, David Fussell, met London musicians Ooberfuse at the Homeless Restaurant which provides restaurant style meals to Oxford Street's rough sleepers. After a few jamming sessions Hard Times was born. Fussell says "the searching lyrics tell the homeless issue from a new point of view. The story is not told from an on-looker's perspective like the great Phil Collins song Another Day in Paradise. Rather, Hard Times tells the story in the first person, drawing on real pain 'shivering in the cold and the rain'. Hard Times makes it clear that being made homeless could happen to anyone of us. It starts 'I never thought that it would be like this / Sleeping in a doorway on the streets like this....'"

The Holy Father, Pope Francis, emphasises "the importance of caring for the most vulnerable in society' and urges that we seize opportunities like this 'to build a more fraternal world."

He literally goes to the swankiest restaurants in Mayfair and takes food destined for the sophisticated palettes of the super-wealthy and puts it on the tables of the homeless in Arrupe Hall. Introducing the “Original Marathon”: This is an opportunity to run in the footsteps of legends in London’s newest, oldest marathon. Celebrate London’s rich sporting history and heritage with the re-creation of the first ever 26.2 mile marathon.

Event dates: Saturday 16 March and/or Saturday 20 April 2024 – Lace up your running shoes and prepare to take on the “Original Marathon”. This ‘new’ marathon retraces the iconic route of the first-ever 26.2mile marathon. The now global standard marathon distance of 26 miles, 385 yards was first set at the London 1908 Olympic Games. The 1908 race had an amazing story which captivated the world and included; a distance influenced by royalty, an exhausted runner, a controversial disqualification and a special cup awarded by the Queen (see the full story below).


As the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games approaches, 2024 will be a great time to celebrate the extraordinary feats of the pioneers of marathon running and the legends of 1908.


Run in the Footsteps of Legends:


Original Marathon enables participants to run in the very footsteps of the legends of 1908. This unique running experience allows runners to connect with the legacy of marathon running, drawing inspiration from those who paved the way over a century ago and to tick off a true bucket-list challenge.


In keeping with the ethos of the Original Marathon only 75 places will be available for the challenge. In 1908 only 28 of the 75 competitors finished (we are hoping for a better success rate in 2024). Original Marathon is not a race, and the event is not closed road. Runners will depart in paced groups, with a run/pace guide to follow.

London’s Newest, Oldest Marathon:
Original Marathon proudly takes its place as London’s newest, oldest marathon by following the historic route of the 1908 Olympic Games marathon. This event is a celebration of the pioneers of marathon running and a testament to the timeless appeal of the 26.2 mile challenge.

Celebrating the Rich Sporting History and Heritage of London:
The 75 runners will not only experience the physical challenge of the marathon but also immerse themselves in the rich sporting history and heritage of London. The route includes running past an original waymarking sign in Eton (still on a wall from 115 years ago! – see image), past Wembley stadium and finish at the location of the actual 1908 finish line, which has been respectfully preserved in White City.

Original Marathon story:


The London 1908 Olympic Games marathon was the first ever over the 26.2 miles distance. Prior to 1908, marathons were run over varying distances.


The 1908 route from inside the grounds of Windsor Castle, through Eton, Harrow and Wembley finished on the track in the White City Stadium in front of the Royal box. Some historical elements of this race remain to this day - there is still an original marathon waymarking sign still up from 115 years ago on a wall in Eton and the site of the Olympic finish line is etched in stone in the new BBC White City development.


The 1908 event was also famous for Dorando Pietri (Italy), who due to exhaustion, went the wrong way when entering the stadium, fell five times and was helped to his feet by officials. He was first across the line, but was subsequently disqualified for receiving assistance following an appeal by the US team. The American Johnny Hayes was awarded the Olympic gold medal. This caused a great deal of public love and sympathy for Pietri, who subsequently received a special cup from the Queen.


Following the success of the 1908 marathon, a legacy event was created running from 1909 to 1996. The Polytechnic Marathon (Poly Marathon) was London’s first marathon and the race hosted 8 world record times, including the first ever sub 2 hour 20 marathon (marathon running’s ‘4 minute mile’). The Poly Marathon is STILL the longest running European marathon!


Original Marathon will replicate the 1908 Marathon route. The aim is to develop the event into a must-do event in the running calendar, raise money for charity and re-establish a famous, historical run with fantastic sporting heritage.


We believe that the story of the infamous 1908 Olympic Marathon needs to be shared and celebrated. The 1908 Olympic Marathon was the very first to be held over the (now standard) distance of 26.2 miles (42.195 km). A distance that was ratified in 1924 and has been the standard marathon distance ever since. Original Marathon will replicate the route, start time, medals and even replicate the original number of entrants (75) of the original 1908 run. The run will be on open footpaths and guided in pace groups. The route retraces the 1908 route as much as possible, with some necessary minor deviations.


Original Marathon will be an opportunity for runners to follow in the footsteps of sporting legends.

Bearded Fishermen Mental Health Charity gets A new Chart entry Single

Bearded Fishermen Charity are a UK based charity offering mental health support and suicide prevention. They have been running for 4 years and have saved lives all over the UK as well as supporting thousands of people with their mental health, Running a 24/7 call centre as well as offering peer support and counselling services for free.

This year we decided that we would try and get the message out by producing a new single. We teamed up with SoundLINCS and University of Lincoln and approached Cat Winter to help. The song was written and sung by Cat with the help of local musicians and the choir from Lincoln university, It was produced by the students of the university in there own studios. The outcome was a collaboration of different people and has ended up an amazing song.

Called "Don't Be Silent Tonight" it has been sent to all the major music sites like Amazon, iTunes and Spotify and entered into the UK and United States charts.

The charity Chairman (Rick Roberts) and Vice-Chairman (Mick Leyland) have said "We are really hoping it does well and gets noticed by a lot of people around the world as this will highlight the need to help people and be there for one another, especially at this time of year when it can be a very lonely time" 

This is the first time we have entered a song into the charts and we know this year is going to be hard going as so many worthy songs are coming out for Christmas and some very big names. We would love people to join in with this and help us to get the song out there.

Our Charity would love the opportunity to get the song into the right places and to be able to make sure that people will know its out there to be heard.

After 23 days and 64 races in Gran Canaria at the SSL Gold Cup it all came to the final four, and the Grand Final. The inaugural football world cup in sailing’s thrilling conclusion.


It all started with 56 nations, qualifying at Lake Neuchâtel to make the final 40 at the Gran Canaria Final Series with five rounds of competition to reach this stage. The wind may have been light, but as the five minute countdown to race began, the tension was the equivalent of a hurricane.


In sailing, the race starts well before the starting gun as the teams jostle for position, aiming to start in the perfect place at top speed. In this one-race shoot-out for the title of World Champion of Sailing Nations, there are no second chances. It’s all or nothing.


The winners of the start were Spain and The Netherlands, crossing the line at speed with clear air, while Hungary were shut out at the committee boat end by The Netherlands, and Italy, who approached the line too low, having to squeeze up around the pin end, pushing them into the disturbed air of the Spanish yacht.


Recovering from their poor start, the Hungarian ‘Shamans’ team chose a perfect track on the first upwind leg and, in a move a chess grandmaster would be proud of, outmanoeuvred the Spanish ‘La Armada’ on the final approach to the windward mark, switching a 10 second deficit into a 20 second lead, leaving ‘La Armada’ open to attack by the Italian ‘Gladiators’. This was tactical sailing at its very finest.


Downwind the ‘Shamans’ risked it all by going left while the rest of the fleet went right - a brave move by the charismatic Hungarian Captain and Tactician Zsombor Berecz. The ‘Gladiators’ also put ‘La Armada’ to the sword, as the Spanish were still suffering after their windward mark mauling, while the ‘Dutch Lions’, who have remarkable speed with the spinnaker up, roared back into contention.


The ‘Shamans’ conjured a stunning spinnaker drop, while the ‘Dutch Lions’ rounded just 25 seconds behind having bitten 30 seconds off their windward mark deficit, overtaking the ‘Gladiators’ and ‘La Armada’ in the process.


The Netherlands team were on the charge, but Hungarian helm Robert Bakoczy was in the zone, while his tactician Zsombor was making all the right calls. With uncanny foresight, the team who started racing in Gran Canaria in the 1/16 Finals were reading the local winds and waves to perfection.


Behind the ‘Shamans’ the other three were engaging in a tight battle. The ‘Gladiators’ tacked on the ‘Dutch Lions’, who in turn held ‘La Armada’ out on the left. These exchanges were all playing into the Hungarians hands, who rounded the windward mark with a 46 second lead, as just 14 seconds separated Italy, The Netherlands and Spain.


As the wind continued to drop, the ‘Gladiators’ charged, but the ‘Shamans’ wove their magic to fend off their opponents. The Hungarian heroes had won the SSL Gold Cup. Zsombor Berecz, Robert Bakoczy, Marcell Goszleth, Csaba Adorjan, Kos Lillik, Levente Takacsy, Balazs Tomai, Zsombor Gyapjas and Aron Nemeth have written their names in the history books as the inaugural World Champions of Sailing Nations.


Behind them the Italian ‘Gladiators’ sealed silver, while The Netherlands’ ‘Dutch Gladiators’ took bronze. Agony for the home team, the Spanish ‘La Armada’ who finished fourth.


They’ve been here since 16th November, raced through four rounds, facing off against 13 other teams on the water, and over the past 17 days the ‘Shamans’ have put us all under their spell as they sailed to victory in this inaugural SSL Gold Cup. Back home in Hungary, they’ll surely inspire a whole new wave of sailors to take to the water.


On the winning manoeuvre at the first windward mark, Hungary’s Captain and Tactician said:


“That was a great move, yes. The boat was going super nicely and I was confident with our team that nobody can drive the boat faster than we are, so from that moment on a fast boat it’s a pleasure to be a tactician.”


Hungary’s helm Robert Bakoczy added:


“I think all of us still can’t believe it. It’s amazing and crazy. After our start we just tried to get back the speed as soon as possible. We were expecting a right shift and it came, so we were back in the game a minute after the start. It was hard, but we could solve it.”


The SSL Gold Cup prize giving was heralded by a drum parade from the moored SSL 47 yachts, along the pontoon and into the event village, with the four teams greeted by rapturous applause and kids asking for their SSL jerseys to be signed by their new sailing heroes.


World Sailing Vice President Yann Rocherieux spoke of the importance of the SSL Gold Cup, especially how it promotes sailing participation globally, with its Special Event status meaning that its place in the calendar is secured alongside other prestigious international events such as the America’s Cup and SailGP.


Each team was presented on stage, with the top three national teams awarded medals by Gran Canarian dignitaries. Finally it was time for Hungary to lift the SSL Gold Cup and be crowned the first ever World Champion of Sailing Nations.


Regatta Director Paul Hutton-Ashkenny closed the event by summarising the staggering scale and reach of the event, which has attracted live coverage on TV networks around the globe.


The SSL Gold Cup, billed as the football world cup in sailing, had exceptionally high expectations. To have delivered on its promise in the inaugural edition is a remarkable achievement, but this is just the beginning of something truly special.

“I’ve been looking into this CE5 process which was set up by UFO expert Dr Stephen Greer with a skeptical mind. Like all unexplained phenomena I take a rational but open mind to. I have a science degree and these things can usually be explained rationally. I have seen evidence of other people doing this CE5 and strange lights have appeared, now was this coincidence or is there something to it? So I thought why don’t we test this on our TV show and see if it works for us. We can also teach our viewers the simple steps so if it does work then there will be UFOS all over the world this Christmas!”

New data from ukphonebook.com reveals the changing preferences in pub names over the past three years, as well as an updated list of the most popular pub names

New data from ukphonebook.com has revealed the changing trends in pub names over the past three years, as well as an updated top 10 list of most popular names.


With a database of 4 million businesses, ukphonebook.com used its business search to find all the pubs registered in the UK. It analysed the data to find the most popular new pub names since 2020.


Trends in pub names since 2020


ukphonebook.com pulled data from 2020 to 2023 to see which new pub names are most popular and which ones have grown – or shrunk – in popularity.


The 10 most popular are – as expected – topped by The Red Lion.

And it’s no surprise the most popular new pub name in the last three years is also The Red Lion. But there are some significant naming trends over the past three years:


Royal British Legion has dropped out of the top 10. This is down to the reduced presence of the institute itself, rather than naming trends.The George is a new entry on the list. Ten of the 87 pubs that carry this name were registered in the last three years – possibly named after the future heir to the throne, Prince George.The Plough has also just dropped out the top 10. This has been replaced by the Coach and Horses.Victoria themed pub names have risen from 43rd most popular over all to 9th in the past three years. Eight of the 66 Victoria pubs got their name since 2020. New Inn has dropped out of the top 10, with just six pubs taking this name in the past three years. Bulls are also making a comeback. The Black Bull and Bulls Head rose up the rankings in the past three years with 10% of pubs taking these titles named in the past three years.

Looking at which types of pub names have become more popular, animal-themed names have risen in popularity – with 6.5% more pubs named after animals in the past three years.


Royal names have also seen a 7.7% increase – possibly inspired by the coronation of King Charles.

After that, however, the other themes have all dropped. Sports, Religion and Food have inspired zero people to name pubs after them in the past three years – no Cricketers, no Angels, and no Shoulders of Mutton.


Are you ‘Inn’ or out?


Another new trend is the inclusion of ‘Inn’ as part of a pub’s name.


Inns – historically, places along a road where travellers could stop and rest – have inspired many pub names in the past. But times are changing.


There are 2,264 (28%) UK pubs with ‘Inn’ in their title. However, since 2020 only 16% of new pubs have chosen to include ‘Inn’ as part of their name.


This could be due to the popularity of shorter names – The Crown instead of The Crown Inn. Or it could be that many new pubs simply don’t consider themselves Inns because they don’t offer rooms.

Coming second on the list is The Royal Oak, with 433 pubs taking this name. Royal British Legion sneaks into the top three with many members only clubs using this name. There are over 400 registered RBL clubs in the UK, though not all have the same pub name.


Kevan Wilding, founder of Pubwiki, said: “Pub names are really interesting if looked at from an earlier date. There were many thousands of beer houses opened in the 1850s with a sign outside giving a beer house its name. Some of these went on to become the modern-day locals we still know.


“In Hertfordshire, for example, nearly every other building in the high street was once a pub. But later the licensing laws became stricter.”


The Royal theme continues throughout the top ten with The Crown Inn, White Hart, Rose and Crown and King’s Arms all inspired by the UK’s rich history.


The Plough Inn sits at the bottom of the top 10 with 206 pubs.


Nik Antona, National Chairman for CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) said: "The array of weird and wonderful pub names are part of the charm and experience of frequenting your local.


“Pubs are part of the fabric of community life across the UK, providing a safe place to meet and socialise, offering a community hub for activities and events. As well as being vital to local economies, they help bring people together, tackling loneliness and social isolation.”

Eight of the top ten most popular pub names are inspired by royal connections. However, there is obviously a lot of overlap – for example, the classic Red Lion is both an animal and inspired by royalty.


Animal-themed pub names made up 34% of all names, with royalty accounting for 17.6%.

In third place was machinery and tools (9.1%) – largely down to pubs called The Plough, Cross Keys, and the Wheatsheaf. Nature (8.8%) inspired nearly 700 pub owners when choosing their names – drawing on both the rose and oaks. Again, these have royal connections, especially the rose.


Vehicles (8.7%) rounded out our top 5, with everything from pubs being located near railways to coastal pubs opting for ships and anchors in their names. However, these options are becoming less popular as Britain moves away from its seafaring and manufacturing peak.

The Football Association of Wales has dedicated the UEFA EURO 2024 qualifier between Wales and Türkiye this evening, 21st November, to ending men’s violence against women and girls.


This support of White Ribbon Day, the internationally recognised day where men show their year-long commitment to ending violence against women and girls, represents an important cultural shift happening in football.


By displaying the White Ribbon message to stop violence before it starts, the Football of Association of Wales hopes to challenge the sexist and misogynistic attitudes that have plagued professional sport and made it hostile to female supporters.


The FAW, it’s Wales Staff and Players will show their support for White Ribbon ahead of and during the match, whilst fans will be encouraged to make the White Ribbon Promise to never use, excuse or remain silent about men’s violence against women.


White Ribbon UK is the leading charity engaging men and boys to stop violence before it starts through personal reflection and allyship with women and girls. Ending men’s violence against women starts when we #ChangeTheStory. This Saturday, 25th November, White Ribbon UK will mark White Ribbon Day with organisations and individuals across England and Wales who have made a commitment to transforming harmful cultures in their workplaces and communities.



Violence experienced by women and girls takes many forms. Some behaviours and words may seem ‘harmless’ but normalising them ignores the short- and long-term effects on women and can lead to more extreme violence.


White Ribbon Day is the internationally recognised day where men show their year-long commitment to ending violence against women and girls. Being allies with women every day shouldn’t be underestimated — even the smallest actions can affect big change. This is the focus of White Ribbon Day 2023.


This White Ribbon Day,


White Ribbon UK is teaming up with Sky Sports on Saturday, 25th November, to raise awareness about the importance of male allyship in sport amongst fans and players, both on and off the pitch. Presenters across sports coverage will wear White Ribbons and a campaign video will air throughout the day's coverage. The Football Association of Wales is showing their support by dedicating the Wales v. Türkiye football match on Tuesday, 21st November, to White Ribbon UK. Councils in Leeds, Manchester and Telford are dedicating local Parkruns to White Ribbon UK this Saturday 25th November.Organisations across England and Wales are showing their support with internal and external events, including Women in Rail and Oxford Brookes University.Train stations across England and Wales will hold fundraisers and have staff White Ribbons/ The rail industry's support is led by Southeastern Railway and Network Rail who will include White Ribbon messaging on boards and ticket machines. At 16:00 on Saturday, 25th November, rail industry choirs will convene at London Bridge Station and move towards Charring Cross station as part of a fundraiser for White Ribbon UK.

Anthea Sully, Chief Executive of White Ribbon UK, shared that this day is an important time for reflection and action by men. “The reality is violence experienced by women is mostly perpetrated by men. We know that it’s not all men, but all men can #ChangeTheStory and challenge harmful attitudes and behaviours that perpetuate sexism and misogyny.”


“White Ribbon UK works with men, in their communities and places of work, to understand what constitutes as violence and know how to appropriately respond and challenge it. Ending violence against women starts when we #ChangeTheStory and we need men leading this change with their family, friends and colleagues so that women may live their lives free from the fear of violence.”

Dare to Dream, by seasoned adventure Lowell Sheppard, is an original book that demonstrates that it is never too late to live your dreams. Through sharing his own experience preparing for his solo sail of the Pacific Ocean, the author delivers a four-step program to realizing high stake dreams. Lowell Sheppard had a life-long dream: to buy a sailboat, live on it, learn how to sail, and then cross the Pacific Ocean… solo and by the time he was 70. When he finally announced in 2019 that he was going to do that, he was at the ripe age of 64.


In Dare to Dream, Sheppard shares his memoirs from early childhood to nowadays, exploring how his life led him to the adventure he’s undertaking today.
